"The girls"

I wanted to start a thread here because I know alot of ladies on this site have big boobies like I do. My back problems, and shoulder problems have gotten only worse since I have lost weight- and my boobies have actually grown a cup size and a half! So I talk to my endo today about a breast reduction- . She said that I am perfectly healthy, and told me she would show any plastic surgeon my progress with weight loss, she printed out my chart and gave me multiple copies. She said the only problem I would have would be having insurance cover it.

Has anyone here had any experience with a breast reduction- or could give me some insight? My hometown doctor said there were all these restrictions, but my endo says I should be fine.

haven't had it done but oooh would i love to...

breast reduction surgery is generally covered under most health plans... especially since you've got documented back and shoulder issues.

Does your current doctor have any suggestions for plastic surgeons that you could schedule a consult with - just becuase you're going in for a consult doesn't mean your committing to anything (and I would definitely get more than one opinion as well)

She told me that she doesn't deal with plastic surgeons often. She just gave me all my charts and said she would recommend me for it. I have been researching some in the area where my sister lives/my endo is. I plan on going to visit a few here and talk with them. I have been to the doctor many times before with shoulder problems especially, also back. I am hoping I can get it done this summer - my doctor said to do it before I go into school next year.

I really hope my insurance will cover it though. Or else its a no go :(

hmm the only problem I would see is that I haven't had any kids yet.. and the whole breastfeeding thing.. :/

I wouldn't mess with that yet! When you are breast feeding you will be so happy you waited. But then again I dont have shoulder and back problems either..

I have major back problems and shoulder problems from my boobs. the doc said that once i was done having kids and as long as i could show that i was losing weight and possibly got down below 180 from just weightloss that i would be a good candidate for the reduction. i am almost done having kids as this is my last pregnancy and soon as i can get down to 180 if the weightloss doesn't aid in the loss of fat in that area i will then consult with a doc to get it done and hope my insurance helps pay for it or like you said it will be a no go.

Frankly, you dont let the insurance companies say no. If they do you should request information from the customer service person on how to appeal the decision internally. Tell them that you will also be lodging a complaint with the state insurance department regarding their refusal to provide you with the coverage you have paid for and will contact the media, your congressperson and anyone else that will listen. Oh yeah, and threaten a lawsuit even if you have no intention of bringing one. This is how I get what I want out of companies LOL.

I really want to do this, but I was always so sure about breastfeeding- I just really want this done to help with my back and shoulder, its VERY painful!

This is something I will have to think about for a bit, thanks for the help everyone!

Good idea Aleehuh, especially since you've got a ways to your goal weight. Never know where those next 10 lbs will come from :).

I just got a breast reduction on May 9. THE BEST THING I'VE EVER DONE! I was shocked that my insurance company covered 100 percent of it. The recovery wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. I was exercising (carefully) within two weeks. I am so thrilled with it. My plastic surgeon says there's a good chance I'll be able to breast feed. I lost no feeling, and didn't even have to spend the night in the hospital.

It can't hurt to talk to your doc about it. A consultation is usually free. I was so surprised when I learned about insurance covering all of it. I am so much more confident with my body. They lift them too during the surgery - so it's crazy the dramatic result.

For more details on my insurance experience:

I talked to my plastic surgeon. They do measurements, take pictures, and ask you questions. They "apply" for it with the insurance company and send them the pics. I got my answer the next day.

Good luck and message me if you have any more questions :)

oh yay! thanks so much for the reply! I am sure I will come up with some more questions to ask later! but for now I have just a few :p

How much do you weigh? Do you have any more weight to loose?
How tall are you?
It says you live in Alabama- who did your surgery ? :D

Hey I just posted more details about the surgery in a new thread :)

I am 22 - 175 pounds. Lost 40 pounds probably have 30 or 35 more to go. Dr. Zadoo of Opelika, Al did the surgery.

oh yay! Thanks so much. I am not to far from Opelika ( 2hrs, 30 mins! ) :D I might just go talk to him. I was worried about me not having lost all my weight, but since we are around the same size that worries me less. Thanks! I will read your new thread!

I have my first consultation with a doctor on June 30th, I am going to see what he says. I am excited!

This is one of the advantages of the American healthcare system versus the Canadian one. My partner was referred to a specialist by our family doctor and that was over two months ago, she has yet to get an appointment for a consultation. The waiting lists for specialists are insane. It has been months and there's no telling how many more it'll be until she gets to have the surgery.

Wow, that has to suck! I have been talking to girls who have already had there surgery. One woman said she heard from her insurance the next day and was approved. Most say it only takes 3-4 weeks to get approved, and then 3-4 more to actually have the surgery.

It's a trade-off, I guess. If something happens and you need to hit the emergency room, you don't pay a penny out of your pocket. As far as the insurance thing goes, you pay into that through your federal and provincial income taxes; however, if you become unemployed, you're still covered. As long as you're a citizen, you're covered. Which is much better if you come down with something and you have no money.

Regardless, waiting months to see a surgeon is pretty crazy, but I guess there's only so many to go around.

Mine are not massive, but they are very large and because I have a poor back naturally (slight scoliosis and two other difficult-to-explain back issues) they compound the problem. My husband thinks I should get them reduced so that my back doesn't worsen, but I just can't go through with it because I am terrified of such things.

My aunt had her breasts reduced three years ago and had major complications, but primarily there was a terrible infection. Of course, for every uch horror story there are numerous life-changing success stories, so I wish you the best!
