The Geek's Journal

Alright, so this is the beginning of my journal. This entry is basically just background info.

My husband, our 6 month old daughter and I are Katrina victims, relocated to Texas. I was 7 months pregnant when Katrina hit (yes we stayed in the city during it). We lost our jobs, our home, the usual. We were suffering from PTSS afterwards, and this month is especially hard trying to face the upcoming hurricane season which starts on June 1. This is my first month back to work after Katrina hit, and in that time, we've been on food stamps.

He's a junk food fanatic, and I'm trying to eat healthy. Try feeding two different diets on $147 a month....doesn't work, so alot of compromise has been made. However, we have been able to come to some sort of "healthy" compromise.

So now, I'm away from the house 12 hours out of the day, 5 days a week, get up at 5 AM to spend two hours with my daughter in the morning, and get home to spend an hour with her before putting her down to bed, which leaves me approximately an hour to get to the gym, work out, get back, eat dinner, take a shower and hit the sack for hopefully 8 hours of sleep, if J doesn't wake me up in the middle of the night because she misses Mommy. And somewhere in there I still have to spend time with my husband.

I can get to the gym about 5 days a week (4 if I'm really lazy). The weekends are my weightlifting days, since its the only time I have that's long enough to do that. During the week is my time on the TM running. The nights that I get to the gym during the week, its so packed, it would take way too long to wait for others to get finished their routine to do mine.

So, that's my background. :)

Wow Katrina, that's tough. Well I hope that things work out for you and that you meet your fitness goals (whether that be eating healthier and exercising more or some other goal).

The weekends are tough on my body. Very little food most times, since my daughter doesn't allow me out of her sight without screaming, even to go to the kitchen to make a salad or something.

So far for Saturday:

Breakfast: mandarin orange slices, and a slice and a half of last night's cheese pizza.

Snack: apple with peanut butter and pretzels.

Lunch: garden salad with grilled chicken

Snack: protein bar.

Dinner: Hamburger, plain, with a can of carrots with a small amount of fat free honey dijon dressing.

Hi! Glad you started journalling. Best of luck for your goals. It sounds like you're really trying hard!
Have you been a runner for a long time? Do you do long distance?

Sarah

Hi Sarah! I've only been running about 2 months now, and at the moment my goal is a 5K, after that I'll move onto training for a 10K.

Today was a typical weekend day for me in food terms, which means, very little of it.

Breakfast: a fruit cup of mandarin orange slices as we were driving.
Snack: a glass of whole milk as we stopped at home between trips today.
Lunch: meatball sub.
Snack: a handful of peanuts.

As you can see, dinner was nonexistant.

I did get to the gym today, ran on the TM, did some weightlifting.

No gym today, but I work in a lab where I'm constantly on my feet, so I know that burns some calories. :)

Breakfast: fat free cottage cheese with madarin orange slices, as well as a bagel with peanut butter.
Lunch: lasanga, with a caesar salad, and garlic bread.
Dinner: 2 grilled cheese sandwiches with Healthy Request Chicken Noodle soup.

Current weight is 128.2 lbs. I'd like to get down to 120, but rather than cutting weight, I'd rather see more body fat disappear. Last time I was checked, in March, I was at 30% bf.

Things have been, as usual, insane at work this week. I've been averaging about 1000-1200 calories a day, unintentionally. I just don't get the time to eat as much as I should. I know I have to eat more calories, I just don't know when to take them in, especially since I hate eating an hour before I go to bed, which is usually when I get dinner.

Today was a real milestone for me. In this running program I'm in, I was supposed to run 1/2 a mile straight without walking, and ended up doing 4/5 of a mile without realizing it. When I found out what I did, I was so impressed with myself. :)

Way to go...keep up the good work.
