The Dreaded Shin Splints

I have shin splints now and have had them for maybe 2 weeks or more i cant seem to shake them off, i tried icing them and taking ibuprofen, but they still to really hurt to the point where i couldn't walked properly after a run of 4 miles

What should i do. Shall i stop till the pain has completely cleared

Any help would be appreciated alot!

Defintely no impact activities until it heals. If you want to keep up your fitness while then, try swimming, biking riding etc. Then you're going to have to sort out why you have this problem. Maybe it could be something corrected by stretching, strengthening exercises or prescribed orthotics.

This is obviously meaningless until you've healed, but i had the same problem after playing football on hard surfaces. I was told to use the seated leg press machine by putting my feet flat and then pulling the toes back, doing 3-4 reps of 10 at a heavier weight.

It helped no end, ive had very little splint problems since - someone may be able to give you the scientific reasoning for it, but it definitely has helped for me and a few other people i know, for boths sports and day to day activity.

Shin splints are one of the most dreaded injuries of all time I'd say, if you haven't already go see a doctor to determine 100% if it is shin splints or not. It is usually carried out by a Nuclear Bone Scan.

The reason I mention this is because I thought I had shin splints and it turns out I had Compartment Syndrome which is a more severe injury. During this time I purchased a Road Race bike and have enjoyed the weeks off from compression of the shins, another fantastic way to get your cardio fix and stay healthy.

Hopefully your back up on your feet in no time :)

The only thing that has EVER worked for me is a stretch I do before I run. You will probably have to wait until you heal up to try it.

While stretching, lift one leg off of the ground, and point your toe ahead of you. Pretending that your big toe is a pencil, write out your entire name in cursive.

It sounds dumb, but it is the only thing that works for me.

I had some of the worst shin splits for over 2 years. After long periods of rest it would seem like I recovered but after a few days of running they were back. My latest attempt to get rid of them has been some $80 running shoes, and running on grass. (I'm pretty sure the grass is the key) So far so good. I've done as much as HIIT 3 days a week and steady state once a week with no sigh of the pain coming back.
However I'm a bit scared to go street running for now.
