last year i used to do 20 sit ups everynight before i went to bed and i was happy with my tummy.. now i cant leave the house without a long cardigan to cover my tummy up. i read somewhere that doing sit ups actually doesnt burn the fat, is this true?

True - there is no way to spot reduce fat although how I wish there was! The only way is to lose it all over. However - any sort of strength exercise that builds muscle is to your advantage since muscle burns more calories than fat just by existing. And really any exercise that's burning calories is a good thing just don't expect it to reduce the flab in that single area.
 
it burns the fat but not necessarily where you want it so do all sorts of exercises and see where that takes you. Good Luck!!
 
Unfortunately you can't spot reduce fat. Although a strong core is a great thing to have. You may be burning fat in general but remember a majority of your results are due to your diet. So no matter what you burn with sit-ups or other exercise, it might not matter depending on how bad your diet is.
