taking protein

hey,
i have been working out for a couple of months, i'm 21 and was recommended whey protein shakes. i was recommended to types: one containing mostly protein and the other protein as well as carbs and other stuff, both in a fruit shake half liter portions and including about 50 grams of protein, each is half a liter and costs 15 shekels(about 3.5 us dollars). so my questions are:
1. are there any side affects taking these shakes, and are there any bad influences to my body in the near or far future taking these shakes.
2. which should i take and should i look for certain ingrediants in them
3. should i get them differently and can i get them cheaper.
4. are there any healthier alternatives.

thank you very much,
s

Make sure to drink lots of water. Too much protein can damage kidneys.
Watch for sugar content. Make sure the protein shake has very little. My protein shake has 6 grams in 16 ounces. For comparison, an 8 oz glass of OJ has about 22 grams of sugar. The product I use is Cytogain, and I like it. You get a lot for your money. Can't help you with questions 3 and 4 though, sorry.

Its protein...its no different than grinding up a steak and drinking it

2. which should i take and should i look for certain ingrediants in them
well definitely don't take those over priced ones, and skip the carb one too. I would suggest a whey protein isolate, or a whey + casein blend. There are differences, but for the most part, whey is whey. I prefer a blend because whey digests almost too quickly.

3. should i get them differently and can i get them cheaper.
oh yeah. get powdered protein and mix them yourself. usually is less than $1 US per 25gram serving, so still half the price of that pre-made shake. look for brands like Optimum Nutrition...its fairly global.

4. are there any healthier alternatives.
again, protein powder is just protein...technically it comes from dairy, and is just refined to pure whey protein. Whey is natural...if you recall lil miss muffet used to eat plenty of curds and whey. the alternative is eating more whole protein in your daily diet. its doable. Most just find a shake convenient due to a hectic lifestyle.

The key thing to remember is that the term 'supplement' means 'in addition to'. If you get all your nutritional needs from whole foods, there's no need to supplement with protein, multi-vitamins, EFA's, etc.

thanx a lot guys...
