Take my training above and beyond

I have no clue where to start with this... Oh well.

My name is Derek, I play a game called Pump It Up. It is similar in concept to the game Dance Dance Revolution, however it has been expanded on to stupidly difficult levels.

Before anyone asserts that it's not a workout, through playing this game, I (and my peers) can all reach a HR of 200bpm quite easily, and sustain it. (which leads me to a whole slew of other questions about if it's risky or not, but not a single one of us has ever felt pain while playing, so I'll ask about that later)

Anyways. Long story short, I hoping to participate in the world tournament for this game. I have a long ways to go in strict skill, and an even longer way to go in simply building up the endurance required for this game.

A little bit about my current state... I don't do too much running... But I can currently run a 5:10 mile (Actually, that was months ago, I may be sub five minutes now...). That's pushing myself a bit, if I'm taking it easy and going for distance, I have no problem doing five, 7:00 miles... I'm nothing stellar I'll admit.

I guess what I'm asking is, what are the most effective workouts I can do to improve my overall endurance?

EDIT: I suppose it's worth mentioning a bit about my body build. I'm 5'8", 155 lbs... Uh... don't know what more I can add to this that would be relevant... Oh, I am 18 years old.

You sound like you're in good cardiovascular shape already, and at 18 years old I don't see a HR of 200bpm being detrimental. As far as improving endurance I think your best bet would be to play the game for extended periods of time, that would cover the skill and endurance aspects.

Good? Yes. Anything compared to some of my competition? Not really. I guess I'm just looking to do cross training, but beyond playing this game I am absolutely clueless when it comes to doing CV.

Double post after three days acceptable?

Anyways. I went out for a run today. 6.25 miles in 46 minutes. :-\ Running gets old after quite some time and I end up getting lazy.

I've read a bit about high intensity interval training. Anyone want to clue me in as to what that is more specifically?

Beyond that, I ordered myself a weighted vest (40 lbs adjustable) to hopefully aid in running, etc. I don't really know how effective that's going to be though.
