Sweating too much!

45 year old male. 6 foot, 210 pounds. Never really sweated excessively in my younger days but now find myself dreanched after 30 minutes of eliptical.

Blood pressure is good. Cholesterol is low. Good shape overall. Had a physical lately and checked out ok.

Is this just a function of aging?

Thanks for the help.

Hey Laggard!

Do you experience any kind of chest pain/shortness of breath/light headed-ness during or after your workouts? And do you have any family members that are profuse sweaters? Of the people that I've ran into, which I think is 3-4, all of them have had it checked out and found to be hereditary. But I have heard of a few cases where it is cause by a health condition. So definitely keep an eye on it and if you have any uneasy feelings, have it checked out asap. When you had your physical did you bring it up to your doctor?

One of my old clients carried around a big bath towel cause he would sweat so much. Just make sure to keep replenishing yourself with water and after about 45 minutes of working out, try some Gatorade and see how you feel.

No chest pains or feeling bad at all. Don't come from a family of sweaty people and I never was until about a year ago. My thermostat seems to be off in general. Just wondering if it could be an age thing.

Hey Laggard, by no means am I'm expert but are doing anything to try and keep cool while you run. This may help your heart rate lower which would create sweat. Maybe a cold towel draped over your shoulders.

There could be many reasons for your excessive sweating...I'll list a few things for you to check yourself on:

Eating any new foods that may cause it
Not washing your body as well or using a new soap
Back trace your steps to when it first started and what you did that day...find the cause if you can
Keep a cool air conditioner as well

Good luck

Hi Laggard, are you drinking more fluids now that you notice more sweat? I have realized that the more fluids I intake the more I sweat during my workout. Also sweating is an indication of being in good health and it pushes out toxins from the skin, just keep a towel handy since it is a good idea to scoop up what ever is being released.

Hey Laggard,

Just as some of the others before me have mentioned, sweating is your body's way of keeping cool and releasing toxins. Since you mentioned that you had a physical recently with good results, your blood pressure and cholesterol are low and you are in overall good shape, I honestly don't think that the sweating is something to be overly concerned about. I am not a physician or licensed personal trainer, but I am a certified fitness instructor, and I know large amount of sweat during a difficult exercise is normal. ( I personally sweat buckets on the elliptical if I push myself hard)

If this really is a new problem that is bothering you, I would suggest (like rofl1 said) to think about what you ate and drank earlier in the day. Drinking lots of water may cause you to sweat more, because your body is well hydrated and able to sweat to keep you cool. Also, eating fatty foods may increase your sweat output since your body is working hard to digest the food. Another factor that may have caused this rather sudden increase could be new medication. I have noticed that in some people, certain medicines (often medicine like adderall) can really increase a person's sweat output. While I have no idea why this happens, I have seen it.

Be sure to be aware of your body, immediate changes and the things you put in it. Profuse sweating is a symptom of heat exhaustion (while I don't think this is happening to you) be aware that if other symptoms such as pale, cool, moist skin, muscle cramps or pain, headache, dizziness or nausea happen in addition to your sweating, you should bring your heart rate down, seek medical attention and rest immediately.

As embarrassing as extreme sweating can be, it normally isn't something to worry about. Plus, you haven't had a good workout if you still look great after doing it! haha. Be sure to shower after you finish working out to keep your skin clear and pore unclogged, drink plenty of water, keep a towel with you and turn on the fan if you need!

Sounds like you are a healthy man, so keep up the good work!!

You're OK!
When I began exercising a few years ago I was shocked at how heavily I sweated. It really surprised me and at first I thought there was something wrong with me.
I finally accepted it, and am lucky enough to exercise early in a facility at work where I can go shirtless. It helped keep me cooler and sweat less.
Problem is that this wouldn't be acceptable at a "public" gym. You should dress as lightly as possible.
And there are some new micro fiber materials that might help. Lululemon has a man's workout top that is made from the stuff. It wicks really well.
Just be sure to be clean when you work out. Nobody should have any problem with clean sweat.

I don’t think so that that is a sign of aging because I have a classmate when I’m in college that he is sweating too much.

I think so , because when we are going to older all the pressure in yourself will react when you are already around 30 up. Its better to be check in order to know you more of what is really the main reason of that.

Sweating is a good thing. It cools you and removes toxins. There's no reason to want to decrease your sweat rate during exercise. In fact, trained athletes develop and increased ability to sweat, which significantly improves performance.

Similar problem here. I think, at least in my case, it has to do something with aging and hormons. There was period when I passed 40mark when I was sweating much more then I used to. Also my sweat smell was different then usual ( Strange smell) It lasted for less then a year. Now my smell is ok, I still sweat more then I used to but not as much as I was in that period. I'm using natural deodorant for the smell and Nonchalante underarm pads to prevent patches on my shirt.

Hi mate, sometimes people just become sweaty. I have been all my life, but what helps a little is (I know it sounds odd) shaving your armpit hair. This gets rid of anywhere for sweat to cling and makes you feel one load cooler, try it and let me know.

The benefits of perspiration are numerous. For hundreds of years, different societies have marketed the treatment effects of perspiration through vapor bathrooms and bathhouses.

We are almost exactly the same as afar as age and weight go. Live in Florida and been training since high school. I'm in the same boat, the last few years I've noticed I sweat much more. Now when I'm not drenched I feel like I didn't get a good workout. I just hydrate more. Don't sweat it...train hard and have fun!
