Supplements/Weight loss

If I'm trying to lose weight while buildling muscle, would it be a bad idea to take supplements like creatine or protein? Would they make it harder to lose fat, or promote weight gain? What supplements would be good for me to use?

Well, its hard to gain muscle while losing fat in the first place.

protein powder is just protein..calories. If you're taking in too many calories, you don't lose weight, but you need extra calories to pack on muscle.

Take in fewer calories than you need, and you shed fat ,but lack the extra calories to build muscle.

see the paradox?

creatine is just a supplement that helps you generate and utilize energy in the muscles, to move heavy weights. some people retain a few pounds of water when they go on creatine, but since its not fat, it doesn't count.

You'll most likely wanna use a protein supplement if you want to build muscle. Just make sure you square up the rest of your diet to lose weight. Muscles need protein as their "food".

supplements

For muscles, definitely go for protein (pure whey). If loosing weight is more what you're aiming for try green tea and Oolong tea as natural supplement alternative.

How about that Hot Rox stuff? I noticed it's kinda expensive, is there a good chance it will actually have a significant effect on weight loss?

It works for some people, not for others. That particular product I have only heard good things about though.

FYI, I've been on protein since I started training again (Late Oct, early Nov) and since then, I've lost 19lbs, almost exclusively bodyfat. It has to be part of a good clean diet and you have to be aware of your calorific intake for it to work though, as well as a reasonable amount of cardio work - supplements alone won't do the trick.

How long have you been training consistantly?

I suggest forgetting about weight loss supps until you do the inexpensive things that need to be done.

1)keep a food log and dial in your macronutrients
2)supplement protein where needed. Consider this part of your grocery bill and forget about some of the processed fatty diet breaking food you may be inclined to purchase.
3)get a training plan and stick to it.
4)supplement with creatine and multi vitamin.

After all that then look to weight loss supplements, because they simply do not work without a sound diet and training plan.

Hot-Rox will work if these are in order.

Good luck,
DM

and a lot of that was apparently muscle, since you can only safely lose a max of 3lbs of fat a week, and that's only if you're extremely obese.

Good vitamin

There is a lot of good info on this forum. Follow the rules given by Detroit Muscle
You will be well on your way.

Creatine can be of use when on a calorie restricted diet because it can help you to maintain your lean muscle mass. Creatine is a very misunderstood supplement from this perspective and should be included in nearly any dieter's supplement regimen.

I'd also say creatine is useful on a cutting diet because, when you restrict carbs, you cut back on available energy. Creatine helps you maximize energy use efficiently, so it'll hlep you get the most of your lower energy levels.

Wow thats crazy! It really does take a long time and alot of concentration hold your own. I have heard of people losing like 5 lbs in a week. Is it neccasarily bad to lose muscle weight if you're trying to lose weight?

??? when we first start 2 a days in the summer for football we keep track of our weight before and after practice... we lose way more than 3 pounds a week..its like 3 pounds every 1-2 days...but that could be water weight since its early in the season

So, based on the fact that it is difficult to lose weight while gaining muscle, do you think it is better to first concentrate on shedding the weight, then toning up?

If I'm am trying to eat less, and take in less carbs, am I spinning my wheels by lifting weights? I know it can't hurt, but I would rather use what little time I have efficently.
