Supplements for a bike courier?

Hey everyone. I've been working as a bike courier in Toronto for almost a year. I do about 70-100km of start-and-go biking through the city every day, plus running in and out of buildings. I was having trouble with fatigue up until a few weeks ago, when I bought a giant jar of Mammoth 2500 protein shake powder and started having a shake every morning, and sometimes after work when I felt like it. It's really helped me with my endurance and overall speed, but I was wondering if this is the ideal supplement for me - both in terms of nutritional gain and expense?

I was reading in another post in this forum that the Mammoth 2500 also contains a ridiculous amount of sugars and carbs - but considering all the cardio I get, I'm thinking this might actually be a benefit for me?

Please advise! Thanks!

Yeah, you are probably getting a nice lift from the supplements because of the sugars and carbs. I would do what the triathletes and cyclists do - go with energy bars. Going with a high-protein bar is a plus. You are probably working hard 4+ hours / day. You need some serious kcalories / day to keep that up.

Do you work only during the summer or do you continue into the Canadian winter?

The problem with bars is they're so damn expensive, which is bad considering how much I make at my job. Maybe I'll just switch to a simpler protein powder, and add some sugar and carbs to the drink myself in the blender til I find a good level.

Yes, I work through the winter. Riding in the winter really isn't as bad as most people think. 90% of the time the roads are cleared of snow, and with some good clothes it's extremely comfortable.

Hi have you are going to need a carb boost for sure. A healthy hearty breakfast would be a good start or a high carb cereal (just try to avoid high sugar) porridge oats with dried fruit if you like that?

Hydration is a must and you can help your energy levels with fruit juice mixed with water this will hydrate (dehydration could also be a cause of fatigue) you and help with the carb needs. How about taking some fruit to work packed? Bananas and rice cakes topped with peanut butter are both excellent energy boosting snacks.

As far as the supplement goes I think it could benefit you putting it in a smoothie in the mornings if your diet is lacking protein but I wouldn't go over the top with it if it high simple sugar and other nasties! Supplements can often be replaced with cheaper natural alternatives i.e fruit instead of an energy bar and by eating a balanced diet to gain your protein.

Hope this helps

do you get time for breaks were you can eat some food,if so eat a good breakfast as said above porridge etc, then on your breaks get in some fruit like banana's and some protien, you could also make your own drinks to save money like blend some dry/fresh fruit, oats, with milk, and make sure you have a large meal after you have finished.
