SUPPLEMENT QUESTION(s)

hi, im 15 and playing football and baseball for my highschool.

Im wondering if anyone has any suggestions on supplements that are reasonalbe for me to take at my age. The only supplement i take is whey protein and i workout about 3-4 times a week. Im also looking for a new routine because ive been out for the past month or so (because i had surgery on my meniscus and am just now being alowed to start working out again) and am looking for a fresh start. and i try to focus mostly on upper boddy right now(abs, chest, shoulders, traps, ect.) because my knee is still healing. thanks, daniel

Since you've been injured, I'm going to bypass giving you specific instruction on your exercises. The best advice that I can give you for that is to start out very lightly, take it very slowly, and make sure that you build yourself up before you try to get back to heavy lifting (if you were, in fact, lifting heavily before you had surgery).

As for the supplements, I would suggest that you take a good multivitamin. At your age, that's really all that you need to take. You can keep taking the whey as long as you don't take more than 3 servings a day, but I honestly don't even feel that you need to be taking that either.

At your age, your body is really doing it's own thing, so as long as your working out properly, eating correctly, and resting correctly, then you'll do fine without taking any performance enhancers. Most of them don't work anyway.

Good luck to you though.

thanks, and as for my injury, im a catcher in baseball, and i had summer league and football at the same time for a few weeks. i didnt realize how much pressure i was putting on my meniscus with catching and olympic lifting so eventually it just gave. And yes i take a two servings, before and after my workout.

You're welcome.

Yea, sounds like you were really setting yourself up for disaster, but it's good that things didn't turn out worse than they did.

Just remember to take it easy until you get back to 100%

And if you insist on taking protein, then before and after the workout are great times to take it.

Good luck to you.

I agree with rgolds, that you really don't need supplements. My opinion (and there are many out there) is that they are extremely expensive and that they really don't do much for what they cost.

Whey protein is pretty good, but one of my exercise physiology professors told us that if you eat chicken, turkey, and other lean meats, that extra protein just makes you have expensive pee.

That being said, I don't really think that you need a protein supplement after you work out. If you don't have access to something you make before you workout like a quick sandwich, then a serving would be alright. If it were my money, I'd save it and bag a turkey sandwich. Here's a link from Stack Magazine on one of their sport nutrition articles and it's great for what you are wanting. The second link is to Gatorade Sports Science Institute on another article about sports nutrition that may help give you ideas on what you could eat after working out that may help save some money too.

Hope I helped!

isnt another time to take whey protein in the morning when all your eating is a complex carb like oatmeal at least thats how it is for me

The rule I always go by is that each meal and snack (eating 6 times throughout the day) has to contain protein, carbs, & fat. You can have a scoop of whey protein in the morning...but you miss out on key vitamins and minerals that eggs (for 1 example) can offer, besides protein.

All three macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat) are extremely important to your overall diet and workout plan. They provide energy, and the raw materials that are essential so that muscle isn't broken down to be converted to energy.

I like food better than supplements because food provides nutrients that something like whey protein can't. Just my humble opinion, though.

lol wish i had the time or means to get or make eggs..

if i really wanted them i wood get up at 5 with my mom (she works out every morning )

and eat with her lol...not gunna happen
