Suggestions Please

In the past I did machines at the YMCA and did a class called 'Group Power' using barbells. I have been inactive for awhile now.

I am 67 years old and want to do a routine at home for health reasons rather than body building. We have a dog that requires exercise so I walk an hour or two every day. I would prefer to use the minimal equipment I have --a barbell with 1, 2.5, and 5 kg weights. I'm looking for a three days a week plan.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Perhaps my question is too unsophisticated for this forum and someone could direct me to an appropriate venue?

Hi John, welcome to the forum! Basically you want to make sure you're hitting every major muscle group every 4 days or so with your resistance training using the weights. Do an internet search on strength training programs and I think you'll find lots of potential workouts to try. Here is one I found by doing a quick search, it's for folks over 50 (I'm in that age group as well, although just barely).

You'll need to experiment and find something that works for you, and then mix it up over time. The quicker path of course would be to invest in one session with a personal trainer to put a program together to meet your specific needs.

Also, one point of clarification, do you have a barbell with different weights you put on each end, or are the weights you referred to actually dumbbells, the one in each hand variety? This will impact the kind of exercises you can do.

Hi

Thanks for the response. I have barbells with several sets of weights. I suppose I could get dumb bells if you think they would work better.

You're welcome. Using both is ideal, it will give you a greater mix to choose from. Some exercises are just are not possible with a barbell. A dumbbell also brings into play more stabilizer muscles than a barbell will. But to start with you can certainly get by with just the barbell.
