Weight-Loss Suggest a healthy ice cream alternative for me!

Weight-Loss

I just recently lost 50lbs thanks to a year-long trip around the world. I quit my job and went backpacking with my wife through Europe, Southeast Asia and South America. When I left I was 280lbs and now I am down to 230lbs. (OK - I'm 238lbs) I feel great and I have more energy than ever before. My goal is to lose another 50lbs. The weight flew off when I was on the road. I was constantly moving my body because I didn't have a car to take me where I wanted to go. Also, the portion sizes in America are massive compared to most other countries. So I ate less and exercised more.

With that said, now that I am home, losing weight has proved more difficult. I am not counting calories per se but I am aware of how much I eat and what the calorie content is. I am seeking out healthy options for pretty much everything I crave.

My biggest craving revolves around ice cream. I love the stuff, but can't find products that taste good AND are healthy. Does it exist? Any suggestions would help. I'll keep ya posted on my progress.

Hi there, and welcome!
I eat soy frozen yogurt. The serving size is higher with much fewer calories and it is sweet and creamy...however, it's not ice cream. Having ice cream once in a while to satisfy your craving isn't an awful thing. You could eat lowfat ice cream and make it a once a week treat if you've met all your weightloss goals for the week. That way you are rewarding yourself, and not damaging your weighloss goals. Or if you want to absolutely cut it out...soy ice cream works, or perhaps whole fruit sorbet which has a lot of fruit and lower calories. A lot of people I know also freeze low fat yogurt (normal or frozen too!) which provides the same creaminess but is much better for you.
Hope that helps :)

Ice cream itself isn't overly healthy but just go for portion control and you can stick within your calorie range... A pint of ice cream is bad... but if you get the little sundae cups and limit yourself to one... then enjoy the treat.. .generally if it's a better ice cream, less is more.. a less satisfying ice cream, you need more to do the same job..

eat what you enjoy, in moderation

I just posted this in another thread but if you freeze cool whip free between two low fat cinnamon graham crackers it makes a delicious treat. Another thing I do is freeze the gogurt tubes. Each tube is 80 calories and it freezes real nice.

Also, the fudge bars from Dairy Queen are delicious and only 50 calories.

Silken lite tofu, some lite soymilk, flavoring of choice, and maple syrup or ground up organic cane sugar. Whirl in a blender and freeze. Or, put it into the ice cream maker. I like cocoa and mint with semi sweet chocolate chips. Or frozen fruit blended like strawberrys or bananas.

Tada!

try making sorbet out of fresh berries. You can just take some frozen berries and whip them all up in a food prossesor or blender. Try adding a little juice to make it blend better then put it back in the freezer til it is frozen again. Tastes great and healthy all at the same time!!:)

if you blend it wih some vanilla soy milk (about the only good use of soy milk i've found :) then it makes it creamier too...

the low calorie, double churned Edy's ice cream is really yummy too... I get that for my chocolate fixes! The French Silk Mocha one is to die for!!!

Again - portion control is key... I actually use a tea cup instead of a regular bowl with my ice cream... I know that it fits about half a cup and helps me keep my portions down.

Hey there. Thank you all for your amazing feedback on this issue.

As for ice cream, I recognize I need to eat as little as this as possible. But I did find an alternative that could be the "find of the century!" Thanks to a lactose intolerant friend, I discovered Laloo' Goat Milk Ice Cream (). It is made from, taa daa!, goat's milk. It has half the fat, half the calories and it doesn't lose any of the taste - seriously. In my opinion, it blows away traditional, moo-milk ice cream. it's not even a contest with soy products.

Just wanted to let you all know that I found the ice cream I was looking for.

Hey, I can get that near me! Cool! Mmmm, 77% Scharffen Berger cocoa.

Oh, and the lowfatness has absolutely nothing to do with goat's milk. I grew up with a herd of Nubians, which are the same goats in the picture on their website, and ice cream made from the milk our goats produced was like eating chocolate butter. It had so much butterfat that it didn't even feel cold in your mouth. :)

Wow that's awesome. Maybe I can get ahold of some and try it! I'm lactose intolerant too, so that'd be really great.

Buy a giant bag of frozen fruit (strawberries or mangoes/peaches are awesome) from Costco. This way it is much cheaper. Throw them still frozen into the blender with a bit of yogurt and a little juice or water to thin it slightly. Blend until creamy. Almost better than ice cream.

Yes they do exist. But often you have to acquire a taste. At first you will have to force yourself to eat some things, but over time, you will most likely develop a taste for those things. It's almost as though your body has to learn about what is good for it. When you begin to feel really good you will start wanting fresh food more and more. You will probably come to see that fresh, healthy food is actually much, much nicer than packaged and sweetened food. Or at least that's my 2 cents worth.
