I'm a coffee addict and it's one thing I can NOT go without. I've switched from flavored creamers to fat free milk, but I don't know if I should use real sugar, or artificial sweetener. My work provides Equal and Sweet n Low, as well as real sugar packets. My fitness-crazy aunt swears by Splenda...

Any insight?

I am too a coffee addict, I used to have 2tsp of sugar in my coffees and tea's, so I swapped to Equal tablets. However I found that they made me REALLY hungry afterwards, so I started reducing my sugar and now I only have 1 tsp. Im going to try and reduce it to none.

IMO those artificial sugars aren't good for you, but excess sugar is not either, you could try weening yourself off it?

I gag on the coffee without it... but I can't NOT have coffee. I tried going a week without any coffee (the same week I quit soda) and I caught myself falling asleep on several different occasions at my desk. And considering I'm a Microsoft receptionist that frequently works the front desk of Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates' building, falling asleep is a good way to lose my job lmao

My cups of coffee are 12oz, with fat-free milk as creamer and use 1 packet of Equal. I'm just torn between real sugar and artificial sweetener lol...

I have been using one tsp of sugar vs my normal two tsp for my coffee. Anything over 2 cups in the morning and I will only put milk in. It's been working pretty well so far.

I can't function in the am without my coffee!

Artificial sweeteners aren't to everyone's taste. I can deal with the stuff in diet sodas, but Splenda (to me) is disgusting.

A level teaspoon of sugar has 16 calories. Depending on how many cups of coffee/tea you have per day, I think you might be able to get away with just using sugar.

I would be very wary of Splenda with all the side effects. Many people I know used Stevia but I have pretty much convinced them all switch to Luo Han Guo which does not have the horrible after taste of stevia. There are many brands around and for like $10 you can get a month supply. Keep in mind sugar alternatives are mostly all extracts and so are very potent. The luo han guo that I use, Sweetsensation brand, is 4 times more potent than regular sugar. So I have to remember to use 4 times less the amount. Oh and unlike splenda (sucralose), which is completely artificial, Luo Han Guo is in powder form derived from a fruit so it's all natural. Anything that says "natural" makes me feel better. I'm a believer in modern medicine, but heck I got a TV, I know about the side effects! lol

I read an article in Women's Health Magazine that mentioned something about the effect of artificial sweetners on the body. Since it is sweet, it basically tells the body to prepare for a sudden load of calories, and when the calories aren't coming, the body reacts by being twice as hungry.

I've taken to using agave nectar in my coffee. Doesn't spike the blood sugar as bad as regular sugar. Tastes really good too.
