Sudden loss of muscle when running?

I'm a 16 year old male who is in pretty good shape. I work out around 5-6 days a week and eat (well, most of the time :p) healthily.

This started happening a couple of days ago, and it's been very troubling. Last week, I could run just fine, whether it was on a treadmill or on the track, without my legs giving out out on me or feeling any type of burn/pain.

I took one day off from working out due to some classes I had. I went back to the gym and started running and all of a sudden my legs, mostly my calves, started burning intensely. I only felt this on the very first week of me actually working out daily, which was over a year ago. It feels as if the muscle in my legs just suddenly disappeared and are rebuilding itself, which is frustrating for me considering I have an event coming up for running.

Does the body do this often? Because my legs feel weak and I can't run the distances I used to run due to my calves burning immensely. Although, I do feel like muscle is forming but why now? Any sort of input would be appreciated.

Hey justice,

If this problem lasts for a few days and is a concern, is not going away, or is getting worse, you should have it checked out by your doctor or physiotherapist.

One day off really shouldn't cause issues, but some questions you need to think about are things like:

Did you recently change your training regimen?
Do you have new footwear?
Did you change running surfaces?
Did you change running distance or intensity?
Did you begin any other form of activity/exercise?
Has anything in your diet changed recently?
Are you properly hydrated?
Are you taking any new medications (prescription, over the counter, or supplements) or have your medications changed?

The muscle pain is associated with the tension, overuse, or muscle injury from a physical activity. Take time to rest your muscle for 24-48 hours. It needs to recover and build new tissues to be stronger the next time you work out.

Apply ice and a relaxing massage are some ways to reduce pain and inflammation.

If the pain persist consult a doctor as these can be signs of body infections and other diseases such as lupus.

Some people are just hard gainers! Also you need to remember at 16 your body is going through loads of changes, I know some guys who were huge at 16 but others who were tiny and then suddenly grew at 17/18. Just give your body time. Eat well and don't OVER -Train!

Good luck!
