I get frustrated everytime I hear someone say, "...I go to school, so I can't eat healthy...even if I could, the only thing I could pack is a protein bar." I've seen that about 10 times in just the last week in this forum. I'm in college too, and I've never needed to pack a "bar" of any kind. It's called making/packing your own food! Here are some ideas...
-Make a PB & J sandwich with whole wheat bread. Use Sarah Lee Delightful bread (only 18 carbs and 90 calories for TWO slices!), Smucker's Sugar Free Preserves (only 10 calories and 5 carbs), and natural peanut butter. Put it in the freezer for 10-15 minutes, then stick it in your backpack. It will remain cool for at least 3 hours. I toast the bread first so it doesn't get "smushed" in my bag.
-Make your own trail mix. Mix dried fruit of your choice (raisins, dried pineapple, dried bananas) and nuts of your choice (almonds, pistachios, etc.) in a Ziploc bag. Wow, that was really hard.
-If you have a lunch pack/cooler, blend a protein shake in the morning, and keep it in the cooler until you're ready to drink it. SO much better for you than a bar.
-Assorted veggies and low-fat ranch dressing.
-Fruit of any kind.
-I freeze two bottles of water overnight, then stick them in my backpack before I go to class. They stay cold all day.
Those are just some ideas to get you started. And everything on that list is cheaper than a $3.50 protein bar! For the love of Pete, get off your butt and make your own food!
