Student trying to lose 30ish kilos

Hey forum.

I'm a student- and have been struggling to control my weight for 2 years. This has been in part due to mental health, and using food as a comfort in difficult times, and also my own greed and laziness. I weigh a bit more than 100kilos, up from 65 3 years ago, and am about 1.8m tall. I want to get back to being what I used to be- slimmer and happier. :) Would also love to find a boyfriend, and being slimmer certainly wouldn't do that aspiration any harm ha. I have a lot of stretch marks and feel extremely embarrassed of my body. At LGBT events, I feel like the resident hippopotamus and would like to change that

A big problem for me is preparing food. I'm a terrible chef and resent spending ages in the kitchen, only to produce dire tasting food. I also work very hard on my degree, which further limits my motivation. I think the most helpful thing I could find, is recipes that are cheap, simple, fast and healthy. I'm a pescatarian, so dishes that have either potato or fish as the main ingredient are the best.

I also have an aspiration to run a marathon one day. I used to be a jogger, and when I was slimmer could run 7-8km at a time. I find it hard to run for more than a minute now, but am aspiring to get back into it.

Other than that, love reading about the world and travelling.

Welcome to the forum

You will be pleased to know that fish is a super form of protein so there will be a whole load of fishy meals for you... I eat everything - but often find salmon, cod or plaice on the menu.

Many of us know exactly how easy it is to turn to eating for comfort when problems arise. It really isn't the best solution for any of us - as all it does is contribute to another problem - our weight.

Plenty chunky people find love - so you could easily catch the eye of Mr Right just as you are - I think that a vivacious personality and a general interest in and liking of other people always helps...

Losing weight would probably build your confidence though - and it is always good to aspire towards a healthy lifestyle and weight - so it is certainly an idea worth pursuing...

You really don't need to spend much money to lose weight... You certainly don't need any pills and potions or special systems which some people will try to sell you...

Good old healthy eating at an appropriate calorie level for weight loss and exercise is all you need...

You eat anyway - so eat good stuff...

As for exercise - I'm a big fan of walking... It is something we can all do and it costs nothing... Just head out the door... I recommend getting a pedometer and allowing it to challenge you - see how far you walked yesterday and see if you can go as far or maybe a bit further.... Pretty soon you could be walking further than you thought you could...

Since you are a student you may have free access to a gym too.

Drink plenty water... There are all sorts of good reasons - among which it helps to fill you up and stops you retaining water...

Read all the pinned threads in all the different sections of the forum- there is a lot of good information there.

Check out the clubs and challenges - they can be good for keeping people on track.

Start a diary - visit other people's diaries and see what they are doing and cheer them on... Maybe they will return the favour and visit your diary... These are the ways that we make friends and build our online support network.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks for your lengthy reply :)

I definitely agree about walking. I used to do much more, and since living in a large city I've grown too accustomed to catching the bus and train.

One step I have made is switching from sugar laden drinks to sugar and calorie free variants. I know they're not great for the body, but as I am quite a big soft drink person, I think its best to make a slow transition.

Every little step helps you become the fitter healthier person you want to be...

You could start by getting off the bus a stop or two earlier next time you are heading for home...

All the little steps add up - and make the biggest difference.

Good tip. As I live only 30 minutes from uni, I may try to walk the entire distance.

Btw how does one get a ticker, I've made one, but cant seem to get it in the signature

If you click on your name at the top right of the page - then signature comes up as one of the options. Click on that...

I think that is where I pasted the code which the ticker tool created.

It doesn't seem to pick up the updates straight away - but it catches up with everything a little while later.

Well done for switching from the high cal sodas to low cal...

The easiest way of switching from that to water (which is the healthiest but more difficult) is to say - I'll have as much low cal soda that I would have otherwise if I want it - but I'll set myself a target of having say a small bottle of water every day...
As time goes on you can increase the target to say 2 bottles of water a day... Bit by bit you will find that you do not want to drink as much soda as your thirst has been quenched by the water.
