stretching

Hi!
I just wanted to ask you guys on how important stretching properly is for you? Do you stretch before, during, after running? Do you stretch at all?

Hi

Recently there has been a debate concerning stretching use for athletes. It has not been proved it can protect against injuries or such as usually thought, the only thing is that it makes you more flexible.

Personnaly I am practicing track and field, pole vault and 100-200m distance running. I do stretch after the first a few minute of low intenisty jog, just to get in the activity. I am doing a second stretching session (usually longer than the first one) at the end of training.
on 2h of training, stretching is about 40 minutes for me.

yeah, i though that stretching could prevent injuries.. but here ive been tought otherwise, just stretch until you are as flexible as you need to be.. no need to be more flexible than needed. i do martial arts, so i stretch after every workout to be able to kick higher.

they say too much of stretching can cause your joints to become unstable
how much do you say is too much.

is it like stretching beyond the maximal ROM

personally i dont see how one can go beyond the splits(in case of passive flexibility). no sports would go beyond that level and i dont see anybody really having any problems with stretching

That's interesting... I've always heard that I urgently need to stretch in order to not injure myself. I don't know, but I always felt that it worked since I started doing it... placebo effect? ;)
Apart from that I think that it's not bad to be agile and all bendy.
However, I don't even stretch nearly as much and often as you do, the_FD. I only stretch like 5mins before and after a run. Sometimes, on big runs, I'd do a stretching break also.

well being stiff as a stick cant be good for you either.
but what i always learned was that you would be less sore the day after if you stretched, is that just bull****?

I think stretching more or less does prevent you from injury... because by stretching you widen your muscles and you just can't strain them as easily as you could if they were tighter. Just imagine stepping on a root when running through the forest... if your muscles are used to getting stretched you won't injure yourself... otherwise it may happen.
It could well be that you're less sore if you stretched properly... the muscles just aren't as flexible.
