Stop me from going doughy!!!

Ok so I'm 18, always trained a bit, used to be perfectly content with my training (sit ups, push ups, bicep curls) didnt take long, and had some very clear positive effects.
But ive stopped working for probably my longest period and i think im beginning to see the definition in my abs going :( . I dont want that to happen, but im also finding it difficult to get back into my old routine, maybe im doing them wrong? because sit ups seem to hurt my back more than my abs now.
So anyway i'm hoping you can help me set a more solid routine this time as I'd like to get serious again, Im still planning to just use my 3 core trainings of pushups situps and bicep curls/dumbell training as they seem to cover all the muscle groups i care about. I was thinking i should start some cardio too as i am quite terribly unfit when it comes to distance running, so with this in mind, what should be my aims?

Thanks for any help guys, and if i need to clarify anything just say :)

I'm not gonna sort out a workout plan for you but i do find that a 4 day split (i.e. mon - upper body, tues - legs/core, wed - rest, thurs - upper body, fri - legs/core) tends to work very well.

As far as the comment about "all the muscle groups i care about" i'd try to avoid working up several groups and not the others to prevent muscle imbalance, working all groups equally is likely to make you far stronger.

With regards to the cardio comment, it depends what your aims are to be honest... If you want to be good at running then run, if you want to be strong then workout with high intensity etc. It's all about where you want to go with this.
