Stomach workouts and Back pain?

I don't normally suffer from back pain but whenever I do stomach exercises my back starts hurting before I hit 20 reps so I have to rest before going on to another set. I have always been looking for alternative exercises to help with this situation but haven't found much that helps. The main area I wish to target is the very stubborn little fat around and just under my bellybutton. I simply cannot do more than 10 Leg raises before my back starts hurting. The only other exercise I have come across that targets the lower abs is the Knee-drops, with this I can get 15 reps before back pain kicks in.
Does anyone here know of any other exercises for people in my situation or have any tips or advice please? Thanks.

Seriously try Pilates 20 min workout video for starters.... I have had 3 lower spine surguries, (1991,92 & 93) and my back was vey weak... This video helped get my back stronger and my legs, and most of all, my tummy is really getting the workout!

Hmmn, Pilates, heard a lot about it but never looked into it, will do so now and get back to you Christina, thank you. In the meantime, I will still appreciate any more options as I will look into ALL options available and choose the one that works best for me so pelase keep the info coming, thanks.

Hi Christina, I did some research on the pilates video and found this interesting article on it with the user reviews,

reading through the reviews, some were satisfied and others were not so I am guessing that as is the case with most exercise routines, it depends on the individual. What I did decipher from the reviews is that this workout is effective for the lower abdomen area which like I said is my problem area, I do realize that I still need to drop about 5 or 10 more lbs and then I won't have much fat there at all but the workout will keep my stomach area "tight" and that is what I want.

I only need to work my lower abs as I do have an effective weightlifting routine that takes care of my other body needs so I would like to ask you please if you could tell me if

1] The video in the above link is the exact video you are referring to?

2] I can separate the lower abdomen workout from the rest of the exercises and if so, how long [in minutes] will this take? Thanks.

1) the video I am refering to is by Mari Winsor.. by Guthy Renker... It also comes with a booklet on the good and bad proteins, carbs, fats, and how to use them in the right combination. And it gives you a one week meal plan to get you started, (one for female and one for males)....

here is a pic of the video cover...

2) the video in itself is 20 min of workout. it basically works out your entire body using your stomach as the "power house" the main muscle... You'd have to give it a try....

Mike you have to forgive me, my mind is somewhere else this month. Windsor Pilates makes a video called "Power Sculpting with Resistance ABS". It was the second video I received in the mail after the first I spoke about.... It came with a resistance band to help keep your body parts in control = no pain.... You should look into it!

Isolate your abdominal muscles, flatten your stomach and trim inches from your waistline for a firm, sexy mid-section.

They have all of these Videos..........

Hi Christina, ablsolutely no need for me to forgive you  I also came across another video from Winsor titled "Ab Sculpting" and in doing more in-depth research into Winsor's different workout videos/dvds, from the descriptions, it looks like the ab workouts in all of the videos are basically the same so it should not matter much which video I should choose seeing that I am looking for just the basic AB workout. Appreciate the update very much!

Oh, your info helped and is already helping Christina and I'l tell you why, on last friday when doing my ab workout, I experimented only briefly with just 2 exercises I saw on the video clips over the net[Winsor Ab Sculpting], the result? I did not get much back pain [if any at all] and I really felt my lower abdomen burn, will try again today and Wednesday but I have already ordered the video and am really excited to get started on that entire routine, will keep you all informed as I go along, thanks.

Finally got the DVD Christina, the seller had placed the wrong addess and I had to wait until it was returned to him from wherever and then he sent me another, anyway, just wanted to say that it was definitely worth the wait. This is an incredible workout, I had expected that it would work only my abs but it works my entire midsection and with little or no back pain for now. Thank you very much for recommending this, really appreciate it!!! :D

Wow, I should look into pilates too since I seem to have the same problem with a weak back. I thought I was just doing them wrong or something!

Hi Beagle, this was taken from Christina's original post:

"Seriously try Pilates 20 min workout video for starters.... I have had 3 lower spine surguries, (1991,92 & 93) and my back was vey weak... This video helped get my back stronger and my legs, and most of all, my tummy is really getting the workout!"

In my case, I don't think I neccesarily have a weak back because I don't have any problems with my back under normal circumstances, it's only when I do abdominal work that this happens which is why I only ordered the "Ab Sculpting" DVD so you may want to check with Christina first to find out exactly which video she is working with as Winsor has a few of them, I guess your best bet would be to pm christina?

Pm me! Its the best way for now! Mike is right.... sorry I've been busy guys! :)

Beagle~ I'm sure you would like the Pilates videos... They really target the area each video is made for.. I should look into getting more videos (for the buns) heh heh...

If I may chime in here again, what I really love about this workout is the "variety" of movements and also that you don't have to do a couple thousand of reps for each to get the benefits. I don't have to do 5 sets of 40 crunches followed by 5 sets of 20 Legraises anymore, with Pilates, you do very little consecutive movements and the exercise movements changes quickly, no repititous and monotonous movements.

I haven't used these, but I hear that those big balls also are very helpful for alleviating excess muscle pain - that they take the strain off of the muscles. I have problems with my posture and slouching, and it always seems to bother me, or affect, when i do crunches... I'm glad that you found something that works mike!!!

I was thinking of doing just that in the beginning but I have a problem with doing exercises too slowly and doing exercises with those very large medicine balls looks more like "Yoga" to me and this does not suit me but from what I've read this seems to be a very effective form of exercise for back problems too. It is my belief that each individual has to experiment with different forms and types of exercises until they find the best one that's suitable for them so you won't know until you give it a try, so give it a whirl!! :)

Appreciate you asking Christina, wife and boys are fine, thank God! The wife is intrigued at what she calls the "pilots" program, don't exactly know where she got that pronounciation, I told her it is pronounced "pee-lah-tees" but she heard otherwise, anyway, same program no matter how you say it. She finds it different from the norm so it is interesting and I am hoping that she picks up on it too and will give it a try, problem is, she is a very busy person and does not have the energy to do this or any other exercise on a consistent basis when she gets home at night so I can't blame her. I think that the best thing for both of us and my mom is to get that Treadclimber, this machine is the one and best constant that I see that can benefit all 3 of us, come to think of it, I will try a sales pitch to both of them even though I know what they will say, that this machine is "really for me"!! ;) and can't blame them.
