Hello everyone, decided to make a change in my life after being diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes and thought joining this community would help in giving me the support if not just keeping me on track.

So a little about myself, I am 5'10" and my current weight two days ago was 447. My ideal weight as I was told by my doctors is in the 180 range but I have always been big since I was born, my own idea of what my ideal weight should be is more around 220 to 230. It might be my self confidence but I can't picture how I would look at 180. Hopefully before the end of the year I can make headway into the 300's and be much more confident in the way I feel and look.

That leads me to why I am doing this, I want to get off the medications I am on now since becoming Diabetic as well as to avoid having a heart attack in my 40's ( I am 33 right now). Apart from that I also want to lose the weight to gain confidence, I have always had trouble with talking with the opposite sex because I was always self conscious of my looks and I feel that I have missed a ton of opportunities along the way because of that.

Anyways, I have so far been changing my eating habits to a lower carb since my Diabetic Nurse said to follow the keto diet since it helps her patients that are trying to get off insulin. So I have given up all sugars pretty much other then a cheat day here and there to stop me from going back to that old habit. I am also trying to find low carb alternatives but that is pretty hard when my job during the week is in the middle of nowhere and the closest food places are all fast food. I ain't that great of a cook either so I guess it is time to learn now.

I also joined a gym to help me get exercise in, so far I am planning to go 5 times a week for 30 minute treadmill activity but I would like to get some weights in also, just don't know where to start for that.

Anyways I will leave you all off with this for now and add more about me later on in the days to come.

That's not strange if you've been big for a long time. I'd say don't worry about it for now and see how you feel once you reach 250 or so. The health benefits of going from 220 to 190 are nowhere near as big as going from 450 to 250, especially if you learn healthy habits along the way.
Do be careful with the cheat days, by the way: nothing wrong with eating 500 (or even 1000, at your current allowance) extra calories once every two weeks but keep an eye on it so the occasional treat doesn't turn into twice-weekly binges in the long run.

Hey Sear, welcome! You are wise to start this journey, I wish I had started at your age!

I agree with LaMa, don't worry too much about your ultimate goal right now, you will know more about what it should be as you get closer. That was my experience. I also agree with her on the "cheat" days. I find I am a lot better off without any, just figure out a diet and stick to it.

Right now my best advice to you is to log your food and exercise and post regularly. Keeping track and accountability have been keys for me.

Good luck with it, you can do it!!

So the weekend has come and gone and now begins my studying for school finals. I see now what both of Alligatorbob and LaMaria meant by cheat days leading into just another mentality. I had that happen to me over the week and today, went to pick up my sisters birthday cake at the local bakery and temptation got the better of me and I ended up having a cheese danish. I am going to have to stop hoping I can do cheat days and just stay strict tell I lose the weight.

Besides that I am managing to keep my blood sugar down to below 180, big improvement from the 300s I was in. I was looking at the diets and I might have to go to a vegetarian or Mediterranean diet since my doctor told me to stay away from red meats since it breaks down into sugar, so Keto is out of the plan till I get a better handle on my diabetes.

I’ll be hitting the scale when I wake up tomorrow and update you all with any weight loss or gain, hopefully the former.

I have no idea how pure red meat could break down into sugar... Half the keto crowd would never reach ketosis if it did. Maybe @Trusylver could weigh in here?

I agree with the first part, that is how it is for me as well. However I have found that I need to stay just as vigilant now after losing the weight as I did whilst losing it, maybe more so. Some of us, me anyway, just want to eat more than we should. Losing weight and getting to goal doesn't change that.

I agree with LaMa on this, I suggest you get a second opinion...

You are off to a good start, stick with this and you will be fine!

I know I am a little late on the update but my weigh-in this morning was at 446.2, I went to see my diabetic nurse today for a blood pressure check, I asked her about Keto and she is firm believer it works and told me that the Kaiser group has a firm stance against that diet which is why my doctor might of told me what he said.

So I was looking more into keto and I was wondering it Thomas Delourer on Youtube (probably butchered his name) was an ok source to take advice on that topic.

Hey Sean, I am not on a keto diet, have not been in years. However about 10 years ago I did do a low carb diet, that's what we used to call keto. It worked, I lost weight, did not keep it off but that was not the diet's fault.

My thinking is that any diet that results in you eating fewer calories than you burn will lead to weight loss. You just need to be careful that the diet is a healthy one. I think things like keto and intermittent fasting can help some folks, and are good for them, and might be for you. Just remember that the real key is keeping your calories in below your calories out.

Best of luck with it!
