Stepping it up

Hey guys, let me start by introducing myself and maybe you guys can give me some advice on diets later on, after I tell you where I'm coming from and help me step up my game.

I'm 21(turning 22 this year), 200cm(6'7) and 117kg(258lbs). Recently I moved to the UK for my work and got my own apartment. I've lived on myself before, but I haven't done it properly until now. I work around the office and basically spent most of my time staring at computers screens. I haven't been working out lately, but I've had quite a few years of experience in martial arts in the past.

So turning to the topic at hand. My weight has been pretty stable since I moved to the UK about two months ago, but I feel like I could do a lot better as keeping the status quo. The first thing I want to work on is my diet, since I haven't ever followed a healthy diet before, and then make my way back to the gym.

So let's talk about the monstrosity which is my diet. I can pretty much tell you already that I'm doing it all wrong and recently I've started making steps to correcting it too.

On any regular day, I would start by skipping breakfast. I don't think I've had breakfast in at least 10 years. It's become so common to me that I don't even think about it anymore.

For lunch I would buy 4 to 6 sandwiches from M&S (2 to 3 packages of ham & cheese on wholemeal bread, ham and mustard on wholemeal bread, these things).

After I go home I would basically take whatever looks good at that point, mostly meat. So a package of Swedish meatballs or a breaded escalope or just a simple pizza. One of these combined with multi-vitamins would be my dinner.

During the whole day I used to drink 2 to 2.5L of coca cola. I can hear the shocked gasps, so this is where I've been progressing from. I've cut this down over the last two weeks to 1L coca cola and 1 to 1.5L of water instead. I've been drinking coca cola in these amounts for so long, I've got take a while to get used to not drinking it anymore, but at least I started.

I'm not sure about how much calories this all equals to, but I'm pretty sure it's around 2000 to 2500. I just noticed this is becoming more of a book instead of a quick description, so let's leave it here.

Any tips or ideas on what would make my diet healthier or even any foods that I should try are welcome, I'm getting pretty bored of pizza by now ;) If you made it to the end of this post, thank you so much, feel free to leave any comments or questions.

So it looks like you pop into M&S on your way to work...

Simple thoughts are that the have a "count on us" range that you could check out... They do various sandwiches, wraps and salads... Also microwaveable meals and there may be a microwave at work.

For dinner you could get a ready meal from that same range and also a packet of prepared vegetables... The bags of prepared veg just need to go into the microwave for a few minutes and they are ready to eat and can healthily bulk out a dinner that otherwise may not satisfy you.

Thank you for the replies,

Wouldn't this just increase the amount of calories I take in and thus increase my weight, though?

The thing is that there are calories in those 3 packs of ham and cheese or that pizza and you would have these instead... You would be surprised how some of those things can be higher in calories than something which sets out to be low calorie - and vegetables tend to be pretty low in calories - especially if they are cooked without fat. The more satisfied you are with a healthy meal - the less you will be likely to have a little snack like a choc bar or full calorie soda.

A pack of smoked ham & cheddar sandwiches is 445 calories... The count on us sandwiches are between 260 to 300 calories... Multiply the difference by 3 and you are getting a saving...

Huh, I see. I never even noticed the count on us sandwiches, so that might be good to try. So that would lower the calories of my lunch by around 400 on average, that'd certainly be worth it.
