Starting over again!

Hi, everyone! Not technically a newcomer, but it’s been so long since I’ve taken care of my health that I practically am. :p

Intro time! My name is Amy, I’m a 22 year old student living in Canada. My entire family has a problem with obesity, and I grew up with fairly bad eating and exercise habits. I was able to lose a good amount of weight once, really changing my habits gradually over a long period of time - earned my fame as the healthy one in the family. But I’ve lost track over the past couple of years, and the fact that I’m in a very intensive course that keeps me at school from 8am-10pm doesn’t help (neither does my budget - living abroad is no joke). However, I do think I’ve kind of hit rock bottom, and that despite my conditions, there are definitely things I can do to improve my health.

I’ve only ever really been able to do this well when I don’t keep my head too far into the numbers. I don’t do well if I obsess over calories, I don’t do well if I’m too into hitting a target weight or measurement. I really don’t care about hitting x pounds as long as I know I’m making healthy choices and getting energy throughout the day.

I also only work well with gradual steps (the trying to do things overnight thing just isn’t a thing, at least not for me). So I’m taking very small steps - trying to reintroduce fruit in my diet at least once a day (yes, it’s that bad). Going for a jog on the treadmill twice a week for 30 minutes in the building (can’t afford a good gym yet). It’ll be slow, but I really want to build good habits as I get through my early adulthood and be able to deal with a lot of insecurities that can be really crippling sometimes.

Anyway, that was quite a rant, but I look forward to interacting with all of you and wish me luck!

welcome and good luck

Hello and nice to meet you Amy. How have things progressed since 2014? I know it can be a struggle at times, but you will get there. Taking small steps toward your goal is the best way to go because trying to do things expecting overnight results burns people out and gets terribly frustrating. If you do not mind me asking, do you like fruit smoothies?

Hi Amy,

I am a 61-year-old female and in the last 6 months, I reduced my weight by 25kgs (or 55lbs). I did extensive research to accomplish this. As you are no doubt aware, it's more difficult to lose weight as we age, BUT not impossible. I've proved that.

This is what I did ~
1) Intermittent Fasting - I have reduced my meals to one per day, most days of the week. I do increase my meals over the weekend where I'm a little more relaxed with myself. You don't have to be this extreme if you chose to get into things slowly, but the ultimate goal would be to reduce your meals to one per day. The benefits of intermittent fasting are astounding and you minimize your food costs.
2) Went onto a whole food plant-based diet. I eliminated all processed food from my diet. I DO NOT COUNT CALORIES, EVER!!! However, I do supplement with Vitamin B12 (this is very important).
3) Exercise ~ I walk at least 4 days a week for an hour, and I do strength/resistance training (body weight only) at home. Costs you nothing.

I have now educated myself in our physiology and weight is about a whole lot more than just calories in versus calories out. For healthy weight loss and maintenance, we have look at our bodies holistically.

Empower yourself now, don't wait until you get to my age to take control of your body and weight.

If you require any further advice from me, you know what to do.
Good luck Amy!!!

Your post sounds very similar to myself. Good luck with your journey!
