Sport Starting new diet; best way to eat 800 calories a day?

Sport Fitness
I'm trying to drop down and get lean and in shape for my wedding in June. I was reading about the "Eat-Stop-Eat" idea where you eat normally five days a week and fast until dinner on two other days. That, combined with a caloric intake of 800(possibly 1,000 if 800 is going to make me feel too weak) calories a day total, what is the best and healthiest way I can do this? What foods would be essential for me, considering I am practically cutting my normal caloric intake in half? If it means anything, I'm 25 y/o, stand 6'2 and currently weigh around 167, with 15% body fat. My goal is to combine the above eating plans with my exercise being HIIT mixed with Steady State cardio, so that I can try to get into the best shape of my life within the next five months. Thanks for any advice.

No two ways to say it--this is a HORRIBLE idea! 800 calories? There is nothing healthy about that. That is a good way to cannibalize muscle tissue and screw up your metabolism.

You do not need a fad diet. Just create a REASONABLE calorie deficit, with the goal of losing a pound or two a week. The following post on my blog contains more info:

people in comas get more than 800 calories a day. unless you're about 3 feet tall, 800 calories is going to be a starvation diet, and much of the weight you'll lose will be muscle, not fat.

you need to change your eating and exercise 'lifestyle' if you want to trim down.

No offense but this idea sounds pretty stupid and dangerous. I'm not saying 'prove me wrong' right now but I don't believe it would be possible to be that low on calories and even attempt HIIT. Just as a ballpark figure 1500 calories with SS one day, HIIT the next day 3 times a week each with 1 recovery day is really exhausting and yet you want to halve the calories?

Possible side affects include; extreme exhaustion, restlessness and my all time favorite reason people fail these self-set high expectations, binge eating after 2 days or so when you wake up at 3 am because your so hungry you cant even sleep!

Better solution: find your 'metabolic base rate' (MBR) and check out how many calories you should be eating a day then reduce it by the time-old average of 500 calories (500c X 7days = 1pound a week weightloss). For extra help, ask for it. For professional help, seek a dietitian and explain the results you want in the time frame you have.

EDIT: also obviously healthy foods only, if you can push yourself to only have 1/0 cheat days a week then you are one track, especially with cardio every day.

If you're going to go extreme, you'd be better served doing something like Lyle McDonald's Rapid Fat Loss Diet. At least you'd be getting in the essentials to maintain health while near-starving yourself.

I don't recommend it for the simple fact that your weight loss will most likely be temporary and it's likely to toy with your head more than anything else...

But I realize that people are going to do extreme **** regardless so might as well point them in an optimal direction.

I second this. I purchased his ebook and will be picking up the RFL Diet after next week. It's very easy to follow in terms of instructions as he gives you exactly how much protein to take, how much and what kind of fat to take and you pretty much avoid carbs except for on training days and you might be getting 25 grams max. He encourages you to eat all the fibrous vegetables you can handle.

He also talks about coming out of the diet as it's short in length and how to start instituting smart eating choices so that you don't end up in the same situation you were before.

I'm not gonna keep beating your with the same stick as it's already been said by everyone above (stupid fad diet), but what I do want to mention is that you're already painfully skinny and your BF% isn't very high at all, it's not amazing but it's fairly lean.

The wedding isn't until June so you have a lot of time to drop fat so you don't need to consider extreme diets just yet

Wait... You're 6'2", 167 lbs and you're trying to LOSE weight for your wedding? it sounds like your shortcomings may be from not lifting enough weights. I have known people that height who weigh in at a solid 220 and are less than 3% body fat. 167 is on the way lighter end of things. Just clean up your diet, keep the cardio steady, but get a good, solid weight regimen going. This month's Men's Health workout (which i normally dislike) is actually incredible. It involves doing 10 exercises in a row for 1 minute each, without rest. If you don't want to buy the mag, google "men's Health sparticus workout".
