Starting exercise

Hi,

I’m trying to find a form of exercise that will work for me and wondered if I can get some general advice and suggestions?
I’m significantly overweight and very unfit – in fact I have always avoided sport in pretty much every form – but I know I need to do something to lose weight as I’m now over 21 stone. I usually eat fairly healthily (lots of vegetables, lean meat, whole grains and un-processed/high quality food) and it’s easy enough for me to control my diet, but this really only maintains my weight. As soon as I do let my diet slip, I put weight on and then never lose it. I work from home as a web developer, so am completely sedentary, and I know that just a small amount of exercise will make a big difference, but I’m struggling to find anything that I stick to.

To add some more stumbling blocks, we’ve just had our first child, so it feels like all of my time is taken up just looking after him, let alone sleeping, eating and running a business! On top of this I feel really self-conscious about exercising in public/joining a class/gym etc…

I know there are no easy fixes, but I thought I’d ask for any suggestions of something I can do that will get the weight off, get me fit and be sustainable.

All ideas/thoughts are welcome!

Thanks,

Owen.

Power walks, light training with weighs with high reps and less rest and cut down your calorie intake! More simple and effective.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

I thought I'd check my daily calorie intake as you suggested and was truly shocked by the results!

I keep note of everything I ate and drank over a few days and it worked out to over 3000 calories a day, even when I thought I was being sensible (and over 4000 when I knew I wasn't)! Most of this was down to snacking without even thinking about it, and extra calories in drinks etc...

I've now made a few small changes to my habits and am easily keeping it under 2000 a day.

With this amount of calorie deficit I thought some kind of toning/strength exercise might be best (e.g pilates), and have decided to do a daily workout DVD, as this will fit into my time restrictions more easily. My fitness levels are absolutely zero, so I'm not sure where to start? I tried some beginner videos on youtube, with mixed success... turn out I can;t even do a sit up at the moment!

Does any one have any suggestions for a good DVD to try?

Thanks again for all your help.

O.
