Start off biking, then start running?

I've thought about this and think it makes sense. I'm overweight and out of shape. Would biking be a good way to start getting in shape before I start to try to run?

I figure it probably is because biking can get me in better shape as far as cardio is concerned and hopefully I can start lose some weight, I figure that would make things easier on my joints and my heart/lungs allowing me to run farther before I start feeling tired.
