Split routine vs. each muscle group once/week

I've been hearing different opinions on both sides: "it's better to do a split routine, working each muscle group about twice a week" versus "it's better to devote one day a week to each muscle group (back, chest, legs, etc.)."

I'm curious what everyone here thinks. Which is better at gaining muscle and strength?
 
Variety is the spice of training. Do an 8 week block of one then the other and you will find your body is overloaded each time due to the variation.
