split combos

wanting to know what the best split combos are for weight lifting as i am soon to get a gym membership

until now i have just been doing body weight workouts 3 times a week at home but now i want to get into weights

I'd start out doing fullbody in the gym 3 days/week. If you absolutely insist on doing a split, then I'd go for upper/lower 2x/week across 4 training days. But note that every time you train is an opportunity to progress, and 2x/week means 1 less opportunity to progress each week assuming you do the same exercises in each session...which you might not. Likewise, a typical 4-5 day bodypart split means only 1 opportunity at progression each week.

I suggest reading Starting Strength or New Rules of Lifting for a good idea of what to do. NROL is a cheaper book than SS, and I believe it has more routines in it. I haven't read it however, so I can't compare it. But I will say with confidence that SS is worth every cent, as it thoroughly teaches all your basic exercises (squats, bench press, deadlift, press, power clean, and a couple dozen assistance exercises (in the 2nd edition) including pull ups, rows, rack pulls, front squats, glute ham raises and curls).
