Weight-Loss Splenda -- good or bad?

My grandmother loves Splenda and uses it often to sweeten beverages and even for some baking, but I've heard that it may not be all it's cracked up to be. Does anyone here have any information to share? Mostly I'd like something to sweeten my tea. I got some nice green tea this weekend... I don't see myself having it every day, but maybe a couple times a week?

anything in moderation is fine... Splenda is probably the safest of all the sugar substitutes, but it's also the newest, so there's not a lot of "it causes cancer in lab rats" documentation flying around yet...

However, there are numerous studies that say artifical sweeteners can hamper weight loss efforts because it leaves a person never satisfied for something sweet...

and there's never been any documented study that says artificial sweeteners actually help people lose weight...

What she said. Ideally, with time you'll learn to enjoy less aggressive tastes and recognize a sugary snack as the rare treat it's meant to be.

I tend to stay away of stuff like that. I've heard stories of it causing depression and thoughts of suicide. However, I still think it's better than high fructose corn syrup. That stuff has been known to be more addictive than heroin.

Read an interesting article today that made me think of this thread. It's not about Splenda specifically, but artificial sweeteners in general:

The basic gist of it is that studies in lab rats have shown that the body might react to sweetness by revving up the metabolism in preparation for processing a large chunk of calories, but after a few times the 'fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me' rule kicks in and the body stops trusting its instincts... so when high calorie foods ARE consumed, they aren't processed efficiently. Interesting read.
