speeding up metabolism when on thyroid meds

my thyroid was "killed off" years ago, i've been on meds for it since then. is there anything i can still take that will increase my metabolism/heartrate? or am i stuck drinking green tea/coffee?? i know a lot of supplements out there target the thyroid, but those wouldn't have any effect on me i don't think.

With special conditions there's a lot to be considered. How was your thyroid 'killed off' and what meds are you on now.

they used "nuclear medicine" to kill it. no cutting or anything involved. the gland is physically still there, it just doesn't do squat. currently taking .112mg synthroid once a day. i could always just double the meds, but i think the doc would catch on pretty quick lol

I also have hypothyroidism and have wondered the same thing about increasing the dosage. There were a few times when I accidentally took a double dose (I'm at 75 mcg), but it really didn't do anything. I expected that I would have had at least a hard time sleeping or something, but nothing changed. I also have wondered about any special dietary restrictions I should do to help my condition. I would ask your endocrinologist about any diets/supplements/exercises that might help.

As far as your heart rate, do you have a hard time increasing it during your aerobic exercises? Mine seems to go up fine, but my resting heart rate can be quite low (as low as 42 bpm) and my blood pressure has been as low as 90/44. Since being on the medicine, these values have gone up a little, but I'm still cold all the time (and I live in a city where the temperatures average 110-120 in the summer!).

Spud nailed it, my next Q would have been what's your resting HR. Your V02max and o2/co2 ratios would be required to give anything but a guess differentiating a good/bad resting HR from good/bad aerobic capacity or a insufficient synthroid dose.

sorry for the long reply..

my synthroid dose is where it's supposed to be according to the doc. resting HR is about 55bpm. (6'1", 188lbs, 26yo male) no problems getting the HR up or down during cardio.

i guess the question is is there a supplement to raise the resting HR to speed up metabolism to burn some cals with this particular situation? for example would taking IE ephedrine do anything at all? i know if i eat spicy food my HR goes up, but i would think that's not very long lasting...what about taking IE cayenne pepper in pill form? thanks

Might upset your stomach a little bit.. Ephedrine will speed up your body, but you'd need to talk to your doctor.. Only knowing the whole picture about your health, since it's a special situation, can anyone give you solid advice.
