I just started track practice today and i have a feeling im going to be very sore... is there anything that i can eat that will keep the lactic acid from building up so much? if anyone has any suggestions please reply..thank u

eating ... by the time you get this it's too late to get any benefits from eating. But, you should go for a light jog to get the blood flowing to flush your system of the lactic acid.

I thought drinking water was the key to not getting sore. Is that wrong? What are you supposed to eat, anything specific?

there are many different theories on this kind of stuff that are supposed to increase your recovery if taken 15-45 minutes after a workout. Protein is the most obvious, but when I was in school, my instructor mentioned taking something that's high on the glycemic index ... but only a little bit. For example, a chocolate bar, but only something the size of those pieces you get on holloween ... but, i've never done any further research into this, so I don't know if it still holds true.

i've heard that potassium is also good.... like eating bananas... it keeps you from cramping...

I agree amomono. Banana's are good. Anything with potassium. It keeps cramps away and soreness low.(Atleast in my case) I was told this from my weightlifting and softball coaches in high school. I know the weightlifting guy knew what he was talking about so hey you could give it a try. :)

Well I do know a supplement that will help your cardio out, as in you'll be able to run longer, but for the soreness theres not a whole lot you can do unless you get into supplements. Soreness is not from lactic acid buildup, its because when you workout you put a bunch of small tears on your muscles, and it depends on who you ask for recovery, some say massage, some say supplementation, I say both and resting is very important. After a workout its good to get some carbs into your system, I would recommend powdered gatorade. I really don't think it'll help recovery but after your workout if your really tired it'll help stop that.

Errtu140 is right. I'm a massage therapist and here's my take on it all. It's not from the lactic acid buildup at all, even though everyone seems to think that. You actually need lactic acid in your system. In fact, some foods actually contain lactic acid....I noticed it on something I ate the other day. Lactic acid is what helps your muscles keep going, and when the lactic acid is all gone, you can't physically do anymore. The soreness may be because you haven't done anything strenuous in a while. If you haven't worked out seriously in a while your muscles are not trained for one big workout. They will sometimes get small strains in them, which is no big deal, they'll heal over time. And as for what you can do? There isn't a whole lot. Drink plenty of water. But that's an obvious....but do so especially before and after any further practices. Cold compresses, or ice bags on any sore areas will help. Don't use heat = it will only make it worse. Other than that you basically just have to sit it out, it shouldn't last longer than a week. Hopefully you'll get something out of this....

potassium! grab a can of V-8 or other tomato juice. it only has 30 calories and has 300 mg of potassium.
