Sore Back in the Mornings?

This is a question for the people who are 150+ pounds over weight.

Do you wake up with a sore back in the morning?

For me, I'm 200+ pounds over weight (hopefully not for long) and for the last year or so, when I wake up in the morning, my back is sore. The longer I have slept, the more sore it is. If I crash out for like 10 hours, its really very sore. None of this has been confirmed by a Doctor, but I believe it is the sheer weight of my gut either pushing or pulling on my lower back. I figure that losing the weight will resolve this.

Anyone?

Weight definitely has something to do with it.

My back is completely messed up, so I am always in pain, but the more weight I put on, the worse it gets. Similarly, when I lose weight, the pain lessens to a certain degree.

So yes, losing weight should help you quite a bit with your sore back.

As an additional thought, check your mattress. If the mattress isn't firm enough to support your body properly (i.e. if it's older, or really soft), that can make your back worse overnight as well.

:iagree: I would echo the matress call big time.

Over the past few years I've fallen asleep all over the place and the softer the matress the worse my back feels in the morning. The best I've ever felt was after falling asleep drunk under someone's dining table on some laminate flooring. I must add that although back felt fine my head was a different story. :p

I can tell you that weight does play a roll and it could be inflammation as well. I have it in my back and I wake up and my back is stiff and sore. I do a lot of core strengthening exercises and it helps. Try to stretch it as much as you can , especially first thing in the morning and throughout the day!

My back is always sore anymore. I've tried softer and harder mattresses. even bought one of those adjustable air mattresses so I could change the hardness. But nothing helps. It's definitely the extra weight. Until I gained more of my gut I never had back problems. Sadly, m back pain often curtails my exercise. It's a self-compounding problem. I'm fat. So my back hurts. I want to exercise. But my back hurts. So I sit on the sofa. I've resorted to popping three advil and forcing myself to walk at least a mile a night. It's been tough.

AHaving a sore back in the morning could signify that you have injured your back to some degree whether it be because your overweight, your posture, how you carry yourself, the position you sleep in, etc. I'm a physiotherapy student that has repeated injured her back over the years - hence my interest!

If you see a physio, or osteo, or chiro they will be able to assess your body, posture, movements, and pain and can give you exercises to strengthen muscles that will help to support your back (less stress in your spine), and to stretch muscles that have shortened too much causing continued stress.

It's not something that is fixed overnight, but these professionals can give you the tools to understand what you are doing to your back and what you should be doing to keep it all in good shape. Try some paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain relief (it will reduce swelling) but its not a cure. Heat also is great for reducing pain but it's only temporary, as is voltaren gel or deep heat or whatever heating cream you can buy from a chemist.

The pain could just be from lack if movement. In any case walking is a great exercise for your back.

Hope this helps.

Try Yoga! I know it might sound daunting but it really helps! I'm 5'10 and currently weight about 180 (my goal is 150) but I used to weight a whopping 260 and during my weight loss then I started yoga. It's like a massage for your back and it strengths your body and preps it for weight loss and our elder years. Back pain can also be related to the foods your eating. Try adding more earthy veggies into your diet, like beets, cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, etc. Stay limber ;)
