Sore ankle - new to running.

hey i just started jogging for fat loss, and after about 2-3 weeks i got very sore ankles. I'v taken a week off, and my left ankle still hurts, just as much as it did the first day. it hurts to walk and lean on it. the pain is on the outer part of the foot, right above the ankle.

should i just suck it up and run through it and wait for it to fade, or should i just keep off it until its feeling better. my job requires quite a bit of walking, so its going to be hard to stay off it completly.

this was totally me 2 wks ago. I know EXACTLY what you're talking abt. It hurts right above the pointy bone on your ankle huh?
I finally went to my dr for it after 2 wks of swelling and pain. He's an avid runner, and he said it was more than likely the treadmill causing it. He said that for some ppl the tread is just to bouncy, that there is too much lateral movement, esp for newbies w/weaker ligaments. He said to take an anti-inflamatory - like advil - for 10 days (in my case he gave me some samples of celebrex, which is like advil x12), and to switch to the eliptical and try to build up my strenght in my ankles and knee ligs before running on the treadmill. He also said running on the road wouldnt be as bad for my ankle and it would help build strength.
I just finished my celebrex a couple of day ago and all my ankle pain is gone. And I waitress part time, so I was on my feet for a lot of it, too.

it is also VERY important to get a good pair of running shoes. Go to a running shop and they will tell you if you pronate or supernate (rolling ankle). They will pick out a shoe that will support and accomodate your running style.

the part i made 'bold' isnt quite right.. you cannot strengthen your ligaments.. once it is strectched.. it stays stretched..unless it is opperatively shortened again.. ligaments help with passive stability, while muscles are for active stability.. you can train the muscles in your ankle of knee to make it more stabel (active)

Do not run on it as long as it is still hurting. Keep heat on it when convenient and take anti inflamatory meds to ease the pain and swelling. While your ankle is healing I recommend finding alternative exercise. If you rely on just one thing you will inevetibly hurt somthing or other and have NO workouts whereas I have dozens of things I do and never go two days without doing something to something. Running is fun. It is one of my favorite exercises but find more. This ankle might become a recurring injury if it as bad as you say.
