Weight-Loss Sodium Question???

I eat a lot of canned beans. They are high in sodium, but I rinse them before I eat them. Does rinsing cut down on their sodium content or is the salt already stuck in the bean?

(*I've been studying my diet on daily plate and it says my sodium levels are high)

Rinsing will definitely make a difference in the sodium content. Most beans are packed in brine (a salt solution). You won't get rid of all of it, but you'll get rid of a lot of it.

just don't start thinking sodium is bad. you need it to stay alive. and the more you sweat, the more you need it to replenish your electrolyte levels. 2000mg a day is a decent value for the average person. more if you're active enough to do a lot of heavy sweating.

That's twice this week I have heard that it's not necessarily such a bad thing. I saw a tv show explaining how too much water can actually kill you because it dilutes the electrolites in our body and they showed a demonstration using salt water saying how necessary it actually is for us. Up until this week, I had never heard a good thing about it. I'm finding through some different sites (daily plate & realage.com) that my diet is far more good than bad. I'm learning a lot!

ya exactly. You've heard of water poisoning before? Like that lady in the states who died after drinking all that water trying to win a wii? It's not too much water that causes death, but that all that water dilutes the electrolytes in the body until it reaches a level where the brain is unable to send electrical impulses as the medium is diluted enough to degrade transport. no efficient medium to transport electricity from the brain = organs shutting down.

Now, i'm not saying that if you watch your sodium intake you're going to die. thats sillly, but it's not the beast you hear about at times. it's a needed nutrient in the body and reaching the rda is a very smart idea. take a look at gatoraide, you know two of the contents of it are sodium and potassium. it contains them because those are 2 minerals lost through sweat and need to be replentished in order to maintain top CNS functions for sports. so even the odd day here and there where you go above or below is honestly no big deal.

Sodium has its +'s....maintaining proper water balance and blood pH blah blah blah.. And luckily its found in virtually everything you eat so there is no need to really worry about getting the levels you need (unless you aren't eating or drinking at all lol- or are elderly and taking diuretics). Hence why its customary to try to keep your sodium intake low to avoid its negatives.
