So my doctor prescribed me testosterone....

required knowledge for this thread: I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 17, had 9 months of chemo. one year later the cancer came back and I had a stem cell transplant in may/june of 2005. I am 20 years old now; had a P.E.T. scan today and I am still in remission.

Warning - there is talk of *****(woah just found out you cant say 'peeness' on this site, well you know what i'm talking about when you see the "**") and sex in this thread, lets keep this mature.

I realize this is not a supplement, but I didn't know where else to put this thread and wanted to discuss it.

Purpose - just to vent, see what other ppl would do/think.

don't know what testosterone is look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testosterone
----------------------------------------------------
So today I was talking to my doctor and I said that I have been working out for almost a year and I'm trying to gain muscle but it is coming along very slow. I eat right and work out about 2-3 times a week. In almost one year I have only gained 13 lbs (124 to now 137) - I am 5'8" so I am very skinny. Most of it was gained after I got over a girlfriend I was together for 2 years (when we broke up I lost a lot of weight). Anyway, my doctor then says that most likely I am not making enough testosterone, a common problem in men who have had chemotherapy. So he prescribes me some testosterone patches.

I did some research on it and most men who take this are looking for the benifits/fixes such as, infertility, lack of libido or erectile dysfunction, osteoporosis, penile enlargement, height growth, bone marrow stimulation and reversal of anemia, and even appetite stimulation. "Anabolic steroids have also been taken to enhance muscle development, strength, or endurance"

My ***** has no problems at all, I am quite happy with it and it's functions that work very well. I am worried that I will get horney and erections all the time when they are not wanted, because that function in my body is not a problem at all and I don't want that part of me to really be "enhanced". Although I also read that testosterone can also help with depression (which I have). My thoughts: I think it is worth a try, I will try it for a month and see how I feel and if I gain strength and mass.

Pros: it will help gain weight and muscle. it may help with depression. help with appetite.

cons: it will mess with my ***** functions - I dont need to be more horney than I already am. i have to wear a patch. this is usually used for older men who have problems with this kind of stuff. more hair growth?

Care to add any thoughts / suggestions. I'm confused, tired, and feel like crap from the radiation admitted from the scan, so im going to bed.

Did he at least test you before administering HRT to you? At 20, I would think that age would be fairly young to start any HRT treatment.

No test was done.

But you have to understand, I am not a NORMAL 20 year old. I have had cancer so my body chemistry is all out of wack and different.

It depends on the dosing and stuff too. I was put on test because my levels bottomed out. It didn't mess with my system at all. The effects were good and I went off it after a couple months. Go back and talk to your doctor about your concerns. He should be able to answer all your questions and put your mind at ease. If not get a new doctor, one that will explain everything to you and one you are comfortable with. Oh and yes I am female and the reasons I went on it (after testing) was mainly fatigue and a few other related issues. It is not always a bad thing. Good luck to you.

I've been on Testosterone Medication before, for a completely different reason(Doctor prescribed of course), and I never experienced "Craig Junior" acting up any more than normal, or any other sexual side effect for that matter.
However on HRT I did encounter some Acne and "roid rage" moments, so be prepared to order some ProActiv. I'm not sure if this matters, but my prescription was in pill form...So, it may be different...maybe?

Yes, I understand your condition but seriously, what doctor puts someone on Test without even testing the patient to see if they have low test levels.

That's something I just never heard of.

I"m with LV on this one...even though you beat cancer and went through chemo...you should still be diagnosed with below normal test. levels before you go on a test supplement. if your endocrine system was stunted from chemo, then you'll have measureable low testosterone levels.

if your test levels are fine, and you start on the patch, you risk your testicles shutting down since the patch is now your source of testosterone.

I have a real problem with your doc just prescribing testosterone patches 'on a hunch'. even if its an educated hunch.

Agreed I hadn't noticed that you had not been tested yet. Never go on a med without being tested first!!! You need to find a doctor that has your best interest at the fore front. I really suggest you find a new doctor and go from there. Do NOT go on test without the proper workup first.

He's probably had blood pulled many-a-times before. Especially since you're transplant. Ask the doctor if they ran your blood to see if you have a low test level, and if he/she says no, then ask them to. If they said yes they did, then you're probably okay
(If you're still uncomfortably then seek a 2nd opinion). Although I've never heard of a patch, I'd imagine it's the same. I've also recently heard of a cream.. When your doctor does plan to take you off you should ask for some sort of HCG or something to keep your natural hormones in wack.

*update* I was tested a few days ago and the results came back I have a normal level. Normal is 241-827 and I was 626, although this test was done in the morning which is when testosterone is at it's highest. So all in all, my level is most likely low on the 'normal levels' but still normal. So I won't be buying the patches. :)

test in the morning is at its highest...sure, but you're not dropping 400 points throughout the day man.

btw, I think you should mail the president a letter about how you underwent stem cell treatment for your cancer...since he's so quick to make it illegal.

 I'm not sure what you meant by that..?

A stem cell transplant is not illegal. It is stem cell research that he is trying to make illegal. IMO, that is the stupidest thing ever. I have so much information and opinions on the pro and cons of stem cell research I could write a book. In fact I did a 15 page college report on it in my biology class and the teacher said it was the best report she had ever read. Lets just say I can convince anyone of just about anything and make extremely strong meaningful points. Obviously I have very strong feelings about stem cells, seeing how they saved my life and I am here today. Sorry for going off topic, but you hit a touchy subject for me. :)

I know its the research, or rather government funded research, on stem cells that he's making illegal..but in a way it still comes back to your battle with cancer, my friend's mom's battle with MS...and countless other diseases.

Its a mean thing to say, but I hope Dubya ends up with a sick familiy member that could be helped by the stem cell research he's fighting. Maybe then that fool will open his damn eyes to reality.

He's a puppet of the GOP. He doesnt have a mind of his own.

No need to be hasty; Mreik and I will split your test.
