Sport So let me get this right...

Sport Fitness
Monounsaturated fats - Good?

Polyunsaturated fats - No no?

Trans/hydrogenated fats - No no no?

*****

So, when it comes to carbs, what does the mono- and poly- refer to then?

And just what is a 'complex' carbohydrate?

*****

Is something like a chicken salad (x2 chicken breasts, lettuce, tomatoe, carrott, balsamic vinegar dressing, watercress, parsley) a 'free' meal in the sense that it pretty much contains nothing 'bad' or detrimental?

Sorry if these are true newb questions, but nutrition is something I'm - slowly- trying to get my head around. I had no idea the size of this particular scientific field...

Just have to get the basics nailed watertight so I can progress on.

Cheers guys.

Monounsaturated fats - Good

Polyunsaturated fats - Good

Trans/hydrogenated fats - Hell no run from it

Saturated Fats- try to get as little as this as possible

Carbs break down like this in the simplest of terms...

Simple (monosaccharides and disaccharides)-Refined sugar, dairy sugar, fruit sugar, refined flour are all sources of simple carbs. Some are better than others (such as natural fruit sugars).

Complex (oligosaccharides and polysaccharides)-Complex carbs are starchy or fibrous. Rice, beans, pasta, wheats, grains, and potatoes are starchy complex carbs.

Fibrous- are the indigestible portion of plant material (i.e. Vegetables) that have a low calorie count, but are essential for keeping the digestive process running clean and healthy.

I dont know what you mean by a "free" meal. Its a healthy meal...but it still counts towards your daily calories. If you give more info on this i could answer it better but i just don't understand what that means.

Hey thanks a lot for that, particularly the carb part.

Yeah as for the 'free' meal...I worded it wrong to be honest.

What I mean is that its a protein rich and low-carb, 'clean' meal. Right?

Yes it is a low carb/high protein good meal.

I would like to add though to not be afraid of getting simple and complex carbs, they are good for you and should be included in your diet. However the only simple carbs i try to get into my diet are fruits. Usually i have my simple carbs in the early day, complex mid-day/night and a salad i would have as my last meal. For your 5-6 meals a day every meal needs to have One protein and One carb. It doesn't have to be done like this of course, but basically I need the most energy throughout the day, by the last meal i know i am not doing anything but sitting and soon sleeping so I don't really need a bunch of fuel from carbs.

Hope this helps:) And great job on asking good questions and wanting to learn more.

OK cool thanks.

I didn't realise simple carbs came in the form of fruits, so I get them daily without knowing it, as my pre-w/o consists of bananas and mid-morning snack is two apples, whey shake, and a handful of raisins.

Sweet :D
