Weight-Loss

I've been fasting for detox for the last 16 days (of an 18 day fast) and i feel really good. I've only allowed myself, water and green tea, and fresh fruit juice.... BUT i have a history of eating issues, so this is no prob for me, basically the norm..i've done this before...and when im not fasting, i eat no more than 1000 calories a day, and only 100% healthy foods (fruits, vegs, etc) I drink lots of water..and do cardio/strengh training, 4 times a week....

I feel healthy, and i've maintained my current weight for the past 3 months...My family has been insinuating that im too thin, and that i should gain a little..they say i need to eat more,etc..and im concerned that my bmr has been around 1000 calories for so long, that if i eat too much over that, i will gain weight rapidly, probably mostly fat. I wouldnt mind gaining a little muscle..i would prob be better off if i could gain some muscle and raise my bmr, i just need to know how to do it right...is anyone in the same boat??

First and foremost, you have an eating disorder. Go talk to your doctor. Now.

Second of all, you have a misconception of "BMR." Your BMR is your base metabolic rate, it's how many calories you burn in a day if you were to do absolutely nothing. It isn't how many calories you eat in a day.

Fasting is stupid, dangerous, and unhealthy. You may feel healthy because the body can adapt to almost anything, but in all seriousness you're doing a LOT of damage to your body.

Again, doctor. Now.

well, i've had eating problems, but i dont think i have an eating disorder, i really dont think this is a mental thing with me... i truly believe i can eat anything at any time, if i choose to..but right now i really am concerned with gaining, and im ending my fast tomorrow...i mean a few months ago i was at a healthy weight....so this weight-loss is farely recent..

Those are dangerously low numbers, and you certainly have an eating disorder. Please go seek medical treatment immediately.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert.

However, the advice I've seen on "resetting" your BMR has been to add an extra 100 calories a day, one week at a time. So if you were eating 1000 calories a day, then for a week go 1100 etc. That gives your metabolism time to 'catch up' as it were. You probably will gain some with this, but not as much as if you suddenly jumped to 1800 calories a day immediately. If you do strength training (rather than just cardio) there's a better chance that more of any weight gain will be muscle rather than fat. You stop adding calories when you reach somewhere near the 'expected' value for your weight (between 13 and 15 calories per pound of bodyweight)

Talking to a doctor and/or a registered dietitian is also a good idea though, just to make sure you have a good plan. Better than a non-expert like me can give you :D

ok great, now that makes sense....thank you
