smoking and fitness = catastrophe? :|

height: 6"2
weight: 180
age: 17

Yeah, im a bad bad man, i smoke... moving on... Can i still train and loose a bit of weight and gain some muscle even though i smoke? Cause obviously i cant run more than half a mile without my lungs wanting to jump out of my body. I do rugby and i do quite well but im just not that good of a long-distance runner. Im quite happy with my body, just looking to loose maybe 5-10lb in fat and gain some muscle.

Do i just do weights and eat less? Or do i have to stop giving myself cancer in order to run, which in turn will give me a better figure. However... if I stop smoking i'll eat like a beast with a tapeworm (and i enjoy smoking, dont really wanna give it up). and should i bother with supplements or something?

help anyone?

P.S. before anyone comes with the legality question about smoking at 17, its legal from 16 and upwards where i live.

Well if you're going to want to loose fat, you're going to have to do cardio, which means you're going to have to get your lungs to handle a lot more than a half a mile.

You can lose weight. Eat less calories than you currently do and run that 1/2 mile.... if you can manage to run it 4 seperate times a day, it won't be long before you can make it a single 2 mile run, even as a smoker, and it will probably benefit your lung capacity. The more efficient your lungs become at breathing, the better every cigarette will be.

Don't worry about distance running so much, just do sessions that emulate the demands of your sport. By the way, if you stop smoking, as long as you are training, you won't eat like a beast i promise you. Just make sure that you train properly for your sport and you'll do fine.

Agreed I am a smoker but still run about 2 miles every day. Just make sure to slowly get to that point, then after a few weeks you will be running 2 miles no problem.

From personal experience, it's doable, your goal. Read the sticky on weight lifting and bodybuilding, it still works. As for the cardio portion, you can still run like a mad man even though you smoke. Try pushing yourself.

Now for the yucky part, if you ever want to quit; excercise is a great tool to get off. Whenever you get the craving to smoke, go do cardio and get the runner's high instead. It works. Just be polite and try not to smoke right before you go into the gym to do cardio, the 2nd hand smoke lingers on you for quite awhile. Smoking does suppress the diet a little bit but if you replace it with working out, so will the excercise; you will want to eat less as well.

Good luck man, what you want is definitely attainable.

stop smoking, unless you hate yourself. my 1 cent.
