Small Problem With Running

Hi,

Bit of background:
I started running with my brother a few months ago now, 3 times a week, towards the end of the summer, but no matter how much I tried, I coulndn't keep up with him. Now, he has been more sporty than me over the years but the difference was very large considering our ages (I am 20, he 17). I was getting a pain in a certain place and I got out of breath very quickly. Anyway, I read up on it and discovered that my technique was wrong. I was running heel on groud first. After I changed to a more flat and front footed approach, the difference was immense. All of a sudden, this pain stopped and I could keep up with my brother for the most part.

My problem is this though. I have developed this pain down the side of my right shin. It feels bruised but doesn't look it and isn't swollen. I read up on is and found it could be shin splints as this is caused by running how I was. If it is the case, what is the best cure? Is it simply rest? If so, for how long? I am anxious not to stop because it will take me a couple of weeks at least to get back up to previous level.

ouch yea sounds like schin splints...i used to run all the time and did cross country and got schin splints really bad (they still come back real easily to me)..the only advice the doctor gave to me was stretch my calves and ankles good and you did right by changing your stride heel to toe isnt a very good stride...but aside from stretching good icing it often and rest will help..i really dont know anything else that will help but i hope this does!

Thats a pretty explanatory article. I recently had shin splints and posted on here under the title "shin splints" so you might want to review what advice others told me. Stretching is a MUST and so is strengthening the calf muscles.

Thanks, that article was very helpful. I don't usually get pain doing day to day tasks. It comes and goes. Hopefully shouldn't require a long lay off then!

Am I allowed to cycle instead?:)

yes that and swimming is excellent replacements of running
