What is the plan, Petal? I looked at a video or two on the internet - success stories - and it seems to involve attending weekly classes, but they also have recipes which are freely available on the internet, which is good of them.

Yeah a weekly weigh in Amy and a support group talk . I enjoy it at the moment .
The plan is really to focus on speed foods and free foods . So speed is mainly fruit and veg with a few exceptions like sweetcorn, kiwi , potatoes , pineapple . There are a few more . Eat freely your speed food , for me that’s berries , melon , apples , pears , spinach , lettuce of all types , cabbage , carrots , etc etc . I try have something with every meal . Then free food is protein like meat ( fat trimmed off ) , eggs , fish , and carbs like potatoes , rice , pasta , noodles ( but watch your portion size .)
Greek 0 per yoghurt free .

I can have 30g normal cheese or 40g of low fat ( there are other cheese options too ) plus a milk allowance . Also I can have oats or nuts or granola or bread every day but one portion . So if I have oats I can’t have bread etc .

Then I have about 300 calories available for extra like if you want more bread , olive oil , ketchup , mayonnaise, crackers , chocolate, crisps . That’s probably a very basic summary of it all . It takes time to get used to the plan . I get recipes off the net and blogs etc . And lots in class . It’s working for me . I like it because I can eat what I like and if I want to have something not exactly on the plan I can use my extra calories there .

Thanks, Petal! I can imagine the camaraderie would be really strong and a great support. :) Weight Watchers work the same way (I've never been, but this is how I understand it) but they seem to be a lot more reluctant to share help freely, and to concentrate on selling special branded biscuits, soups etc. That's why I said I liked the freely available recipes on the internet.
So - food is roughly divided up into two categories, but no category is labelled "bad" - I like that. (Though I guess sugar is out, except in the 300 calories per day?)
I'm interested that pineapple and kiwifruit aren't in the "speed" category - especially interested because I like pineapple! Is it because of calories or for some other reason?
I like Greek yoghurt, too! How much is a portion size?

And it wouldn't only be the camaraderie - having a group leader/nutritionist on hand weekly would be a real boost! Have I got that right? I know you spoke about someone who helped setting goals, and being ready to talk to you about maintenance when you hit that magic spot. (hurray!)
Really great :beating: that it's working for you! And I'm looking forward excitedly to catching up Tuesday morning!

Yeah I guess it seems to be more available than WW but they do sell bars at class if you want them . And they sell frozen dinners etc but they don't push them really . Seems to be all about fresh . A portion size would be a small pot of yoghurt so I suppose 125g to 170g . I'm not sure why those fruits are not speed but I will try find out.
The 300 calories I think they would prefer you to have for adding to your meals then eating sweets but it's your choice to use as you wish. The call them syns for synergy . Some things get a lower syn value even if they have more than say 20 calories which is a syn . Stuff like a vanilla Greek yoghurt with 80 calories only carries a syn value of 0.5. Whereas a chocolate bar with 100 calories is 5 syns . So 300 cals = 15 syns as a rough rule.

I think they put a huge amount of work into these plans , teams of nutritionists and dieticians etc. So yes you are right about it all and the leader says she is always available if you need a chat at some point . Thanks for taking an interest .

Hey Petal, I also looked it up. You are right it appears to be a UK based thing, but there is a Slimming World USA, that seems to be the same, but with locations here. Some of the things would worry me a bit, I am not sure I would do well with the unlimited free foods, I can eat an awful lot of lean meat, pasta, etc. But then I looked at some of the "Real-life Stories" and they are pretty impressive. I also looked for online reviews, what I found was quite mixed, a lot of good ones, and bad ones. It appears to me most of the bad reviews come from people who did not like or did not have a good "consultant" not so much on the basis of the diet.

I assume the groups and the consultant or leader are the key thing. I know how important support and reinforcement from others is in this process. I get a lot from this forum, but doing it face to face could be better, or a good supplement anyway.

I didn't see how much they charge, I am sure it costs something. I have no problem with paying for value, but always ask the question. I was impressed to see that they contribute to a lot of charities and good causes.

Are you doing it? What do you think so far?

So sorry Rob I did not get a notification that you posted here and I was just reminded by it in Cates diary now. ( sorry Cate you better not delete) .

Yes it costs 9 euro a week. You have to use common sense with free food. If I have pasta ( I actually only have once per week same as rice ) I put a small portion on the plate , pile it high with spinach then put my sauce on top. Potatoes I limit too to one medium or 3 mini . But I eat them maybe 4 days. Bread I don't eat every day.

I just like having a plan to follow really , I hate calorie counting , I like being allowed carbs so it seems to just suit me. The classes are ok , I get good tips but they can push food where they are partnered up with a company for example Iceland . They also sell their own bars which are processed stuff.
I take what suits me from the plan which is the guidelines and concentrate on the fresh food ideas. So far I'm doing good on it I think.

Thanks for showing interest and again sorry I missed your post. I used to get notifications but I don't now not sure why .

Hi all,
I have to say I am lost: what is the difference in between Slimming world and weight watcher?

Andy I doubt there is too much difference. I never liked counting points with ww . It was a chore . With SW I don’t count except for things like salad dressing or ketchup or food like cake etc . I’m not sure what the WW plan is now I have not been there in maybe 10 years or more .
