Hi everyone,

Does sleep deprivation affect weight loss on Cohens? I have seen this mentioned a couple of times and just wondered, I am sleep deprived ALOT (with a 11 week old baby) and my weight loss seems to have really slowed down. If so, why? Is it even worth continuing until my daughter is sleeping through?

Thanks,
Kim

Hi Kim,
Are you still breastfeeding? If so, I think this program is probably not great to be doing.
Assuming you are not breastfeeding, you are still recovering from a major life event. I think you need to be gentle on yourself. Keep going on the program, but don't have such high expectations of yourself! (I'm sure there are enough expectations of you in other areas!!)
In terms of sleeping through the night- it could be a long time before a baby sleeps through the night. In my experience, it was based less on routines and structures and the like than it was on baby's personality. My 9 year old son still regularly wakes through the night!!

I think that it's true that sleep has something to do with losing. The gal at the clinic mentioned that during REM sleep is when you do most of your body repair. I am in the bad habit of weighing myself daily still and I noticed that the last two nights my husband woke me up at 5am which would be prime REM sleep for me (don't ask why - it just has to do with my husband being an idiot). So I didn't lose anything either day. It could be that, or it could just be my body holding on to it's fat for dear life thinking I might be starving it. In which case, I will start losing again when it realizes it is going to lose this battle. In the meantime, I'm going to have words with my husband. I don't think it would be a reason to stop doing the program though. Like the other lady said, my kids are 5 and 3 and seldom sleep through the night.

Hi Kimmy1:)

I know I mentioned yesterday that i had only 2 hours sleep the saturday night due to my son being sick through the night and noisy neighbours and thought this might affect my weightloss.
But that was an extreme only having the 2hrs sleep but normally I am up during the night anyway, I am so in tune with my boys that I wake when they go to the toilet or call out etc. Since I have had kids like what HL said I have never had an uninterrupted night sleep, now in the past when I have done othe diets this would have really affected me the next day but with Cohen's I have never felt better I wake and have brekkie and feel really good throughout the day I don't flag in the afternoon which I used to before.

It will be interesting to see at my 8week weigh in how I go. Having only 2hrs on the weekend mostly definitely would have upset my HGH. But like I said I never get a full night sleep anyway and I still lost 6kg in 4 weeks.
I am pretty happy with this so far.
Hope this helped some.
Sam:)

Thanks so much for your responses! I guess comparing how I felt with my first and second babies, I can see how much better I feel being on Cohens - heaps more energy, so even if the loss is delayed, Ill just have to live with it!:)
Hi HL - No, I am not breastfeeding, I am on heart medication that you cant feed with. I guess I am hard on myself, but thats because I had a very heart failure situation after the birth of my baby and I am under strict instructions to lose the weight asap from my cardiologist:rolleyes: I had to laugh the other night after reading your message, my 4 year old (who is incredibly difficult to get to bed, but once there usually doesnt move for 12 hours) woke up twice during the night calling for me! AND it was on one of the rare nights my little one slept 7 hours straight! So yes, I get your point LOL!!!When I was referring to sleeping through, this is what I meant - at the moment she wakes every 3 or 4 hours! Thanks so much for your support and nice words, it truly made me feel better about it all...
Hi Sasha - Your post made me smile...Your "idiot husband" LOL!!! And yes, it does confirm what I thought...not that men are idiots, but that sleep affects weight loss!!!:D
Hey Sam! You will be fine I am sure:) The fact that you weigh yourself when you are meant to is great! Cause then I suppose you dont stress about the daily ups and downs of your loss. I cant wait to see how you go at your weigh in!!!

Kimmy one thing I have noticed about the sleep thing for me, is more the quality rather than the quantity. I have had nights where I have had 7-8 hours sleep and the weight loss was minimal, usually I wake for a middle of the night pee, but there have been times where I have had a social event and a late night early morning thing happening and because it has been a 'good quality' sleep the weight loss was more significant.
Hope it all settles down for you soon.
Lauren

Hi guys,

I am giving up trying to work out this sleep/loss thing, I had a terrible nights sleep last night and woke up to a kilo loss:D ?!!I guess I will just resign myself to the fact that my body will lose at the rate it is going to!
Yayy, I am happy!!!
