Skinny Fat

Hello,

I am looking for some advise. I have been going the gym for two years now and feel comfortable in myself. I am 6f6 and weigh just under 14stone. I have a bicep size when flexed of 14inch.

I use to be very skinny and no muscle but now I am alot more confident in myself. People have always told me I am not fat but with been so tall I pull it off well. I am 'skinny fat'

I have alot of fat around my tummy and love handles and would like to tone up around this area. But I am aware you lose body fat all over you cannot work on one area. I am concerned I would go skinny again and my arms also due to losing body fat.

My question is would this be correct. I have cut the junk food out of my diet and limiting my carbs. Any advice would be greatful

You can only lose fat by burning more calories than you take in (or liposuction but yeah...). When this happens your body will burn a mixture of muscle and fat in order to produce the missing energy. So you will always lose some muscle when you try and lose fat. However, there are several ways to reduce the amount of fat lost, such as keeping protein intake high and taking anti-catabolic supplements such as BCAAs.

While it's impossible to predict exactly how much muscle you will lose (as the ration of fat burn : muscle burn is largely genetic), it is usually possible to lose the fat with very little muscle loss.

A good time to do cardio (fat burn) is right after weight training, when your body is more likely to burn fat than muscle, or first thing in the morning before breakfast.

Hi There,
If you are serious about it, you could start the day with doing some seriuos powerwalking.
My experience with this. It did not peel of muscle and it did do good stuff for fat burning.

One of the best ways to lose fat is to build muscle, muscle mass burns calories, so focus on that, have a high protein diet and cut out high carb foods after about 6 pm.

You might want to read Mark Sisson's book "The Primal Blueprint". He combines together the most cutting edge research into a readable manual which explains a very important truth. That is that our bodies can be "tuned" to burn either primarily fat or primarily carbohydrates because our genes can be expressed (turned on/off) for either mode by what type of fuel we primarily expose our body to.

It's a very helpful read and so far, it's working for me. You need to really do measurements though when you follow the plan in that book. The diet & exercise plan will cause you to put on muscle and loose fat but the result is that the scale stays the same for long periods of time. The change in the body is evident though on many other levels. For example, my wedding ring is now very loose, I have to hitch up my belt to the third knotch when it was at the first knotch at the beginning of the year, and my face is noticeably thinner. As to other noticeable improvements, I no long feel like my heart is going to pound through my chest when I go up a flight of stairs to tuck my kids in at night.
