Sit-ups

Well I've been doing a lot of sit-ups in an effort to make sure the tummy shrinks and tones up a bit as I lose the weight. They are going fine... only when I do them, as I'm coming up I feel the strain around the front of my neck and I dont think this is right...? Is this a fault with my technique, or is it normal to feel the pull there?

Thanks for any replies.

That doesn't sound normal.

Do you work out at a gym? perhaps you cn have one of the trainers (or regulars) watch you and give you some instructions on your form.

Don't pull on your neck with your arms when you move u, it will hurt you after awhile. Try not to hold onto your head at all, instead just let your hands float freely behind your head until you get comfortable doing 10 and your head/stomach is used to it.

It's not that I'm pulling at it with my hands, but more I think that I am bending my head forward instinctively -should I be trying to relax it?

I am doing them at home but I do belong to a gym so I guess I could try and find an instructor to quiz about it...

That shouldn't happen, when I do it I feel the burn in my stomach but nowhere else. Make sure your back and head are straight, that helps.
Also, what position are your arms in when you do sit-ups?
If you keep them in a cross on your chest, it's better for making the abdominal area do the work..

Your neck shouldn't hurt at all. When I first started I had a hard time with how to put my head and it made my neck and shoulds burn. If your neck isn't very strong, just rest your head on you hands for support - but nothing else. You shouldn't feel any work in your arms - they should be neutral, just supporting the neck.

Heres a good demo:

I agree with crossing your arms across your chest so that your not using your hands to help pull yourself up. There is another way of doing sit-ups so that you're not on the ground. Sit on the edge of your bed, feet on the floor, lay back on the bed, cross your arms across your chest and sit-up. It's pretty much the same as the machine I use at the gym.

Thanks for all those tips... I have been having my hands by my legs and running them towards my feet, but will def start crossing my arms and will try the bed ones as that sounds pretty good. :)

I sometimes do mine the opposite way. I sit up with my knees bent, and start to lower my upper body. I find I can concentrate on my abs better this way.:)

Don't rely so much on situps

Situps and ab exercises play a small part in flat tummy

To make your tummy flat - Just focus on burning fat 75% of the time and focus on ab exercises the other 25%

Here's s good article on making your tummy flat:

Hi... I am not relying on the situps at all, I am dieting and excercising as much as I can to burn the fat from all over. The situps dont even make up 25%- they're just something I do each day as a little something extra so that as I slim down a bit I might be a bit less flabby round the middle! :D
