shoulder pain while running

I have started running. I walk 3 minutes and then run 3 minutes. I do this a total of 5 times. Sometimes I get a sharp pain in my shoulder. I'm sure it's lack of oxygen but is there any advice on breathing techniques to control this?

Maybe try breathing deeper and slower. More controlled. Even under heavy exercise you don't use your full lung capacity, so you can always get a little extra oxygen by breathing deeper.

It could however be your spine. When you run it sort of 'bounces' your skeletal structure, which can massage and soften certain tissues, to help correct alignment, but which can also pinch nerves if the spine is improperly aligned. Shoulder pain is a common sign of a bad back.

Start working on more core exercises, especially around your upper and lower back and see if that doesn't help to correct your shoulder. Keep running, but don't ignore that shoulder pain and push too had.

Where in your shoulder?

Its probably not lack of oxygen thats unlikely. Its probably more you being tight through the shoulders whilst you are running. Let your shoulders drop and move with the rest of your body rather than shrugged up.

I got this when I started running. Do you also get a side ache sometimes that the same side the shoulder is on?

Is the pain actually in your shoulder and not your chest? When I resumed working out 2 years ago I would get chest pains from my rib muscles (intercostals) from hard breathing. I'll bet you don't get these pains when walking because you don't breathe hard enough when walking.

shoulder pain

I have had the same pains in my side while I run. They feel like sharp pains that hurt when you take a deep breath. To make them go away I try to breath faster and deeper which does make them go away eventually. That's why I thought the shoulder pain was probably the same concept, but I think that could be true about the posture or bad back. Part of the problem could be that I'm pushing a stroller while I run. I push it with my right hand and it's my right shoulder that starts hurting. I do catch myself leaning more on my right side-- which in turn has caused my right knee to hurt. I probably need to get a jogging stroller that I can push with both hands so I can straighten my posture. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Ouch, yeah, running like that does sound like it would start pinching up the shoulder. If your body can't move comfortably and evenly, things are going to cramp and pinch. Always try to keep as much evenness in your bodyweight/pressure/strain/etc as you can.

Of course muscle imbalance, etc can't really be avoided, but you get what I mean. Run straight and even. If you think about what you're doing to your arm in order to run with that stroller. The pressure you're applying, and the duration your body has to resist that pressure all on one side. I'm fairly certain that this is your problem if you're only getting it in that same side.
