Should/What should I eat before I run?

A slight change in my schedule means I my current workout schedule will have to change. I currently run on a treadmill at Lunchtime for 30 mins 3 times a week and just have my lunch afterwards.

As I say circumstances have changed so I am going to run on a morning before work. I am not sure if I should be eating something before I run on a morning or when I get back, or both?

Any ideas?

breakfast first and then run 30 minutes after breakfast

I my opinion it is more important to eat after you work out... in 30 minutes of running you aren't going to suffer by not eating before you run... That being said I would make sure you are hydrated...

And... depending on the intesity of your running eating may be a problem before hand... I eat before my long runs but... 1.5 hours before I go... and I eat a 1/2 cup of grapenuts... and then drink fluids until about 30 minutes before... by the time I am done is is almost lunch time

If I run in the morning and I am running less than an hour... I eat after only...

depending on how far im runing, I eat a protein bar before I run (approx 250 cal) and a glass of light chocolate soymilk after (approx 120 cal). ive read somewhere, i think it was one of those girly fitness magazines that the best thing you can drink is chocolate milk after a workout because it has like a perfect comboniation of caarbs and proteins, etc to replenish after a workout, plus anythngyou eat within the first 45 minutea after a workout will be eaten up by the post burn anyway...that said, i prefer soymilk, sooo...there ya go :)

I cant run on an empty stomach...i think id..well, i would. :)

you have aproximately 1600 caleries of carbs stored when you wake up which is more than enough to get you through a 30min workout. I've been trying to work out the best time for eating and drinking before running and have come to the conclusion that you should leave at least 2 or 3 hours gap before a long run. and that counts for drinking a lot too. obviously make sure you are hydrated but don't down a litre just before hand or you'll feel it. you need time for the stomach to empty. start drinking again just before you start exercising but only small amounts. if you don't have much time before getting up and doing the run then make sure what you drink is a hypotonic drink (i think that's the one -with a small amount of glucose in it so it's absorbed quicker). then gorge yourself after.
