Should I do Abs?

I didn't want to hijack Deep Green's thread, but the discussion made me wonder. I don't do anything specifically for my abs. I workout for an hour two to three times per week. I presently go for 'full body workouts'. These usually include squats or deadlifts, plus some kind of bench presses, chin ups / pull ups and a choice of other exercises (e.g. push ups, rows, shoulder presses, lat pulls, leg press, etc). But I hate crunches.

Should I incorporate some sort of ab exercise, or would my compound exercises suffice?

I don't do any direct ab work. But can. Treat as any other muscle.

Your core gets plent of work if you are doing the right exercises, which it sounds like you are.

I think you should aim for abs.. they are like the completion to fitness for most ppl lol... and plus they are damn sexy.

Doing ab work depends on the circumference of your weight training program AND your goals. Some have gotten good results just relying on the DIET (Which is where the REAL AB WORK IS DONE any hoot! Abs are made in the kitchen), and no cardio, or a combination of doing cardio with a correct diet (ETC).

I agree completely, there are weight training exercises, that directly and indirectly work the ab core (and if DIET is correct) you can get abs without doing abs at all.

However, I like working the abs directly with direct exercises, because I like the control and flex feature in the muscle (it gives me). And, when the fat cleared off, I could see that they actually responded well to weighted exercises.

Another thing, that seemed to work (which was a indirect exercise) to assist with lose skin, was doing the the back (and a careful zig-zag diet) to improve back muscle growth, which pulled the skin back after a few weeks of time in the back exercises. The main thing to really concentrate on is a clean diet-=the abs are one of the closest muscle skirt to the organs, and is why its hard to get them to show (if the genetics are there). The abs can take a beating and keep on ticking as they are a high endurance muscle; however, they should be treated with care and given proper rest for recovery. You make them overly SORE, you will NOT want to do that again, as you will find out just how much they are used day to day and in your weight training. GOOD LUCK!

I do a sit up variation in my run warm up and cool down, but otherwise dont work them directly, either. I do them only because it's in the training protocol my friend gave me from her army book :).

If you are overwight, reducing the body fat will reveal those abs you desire. One cannot spot reduce, you lose fat all over your body. Get your diet right, and you will be on your way. Why do you advertise HOODIA FAT LOSS PILLS? In addition, over the counter fat loss pills are absolutely BUNK! There loaded with caffiene, green tea, and other stuff. I have read on these, I know what they claim green tea does, blah, blah, blah. Waste of money. NOTHING replaces being educated, and having enough HARD WORK, WILL POWER, DESIRE to see your goals through. NO FEELING ON EARTH replaces the feeling one gets after trials and tribulations.......once there goal is REACHED. No 1sec cheese cake, replaces the everyday feeling one gets from that........hands down. (well, maybe one TYPE, LOL)

Its not really a goal, not one that I feel is achievable for myself anyhow. My goal is to be stronger and fitter for my age, the cosmetics are nice, but not so important. In February I tried to get rid of this belly. I cut calories and reduced my weight to under ten stone - 138 pounds. I still had a bit of a belly, but I didn't feel comfortable or as fit at that weight as I do at around 150 pounds (I'm 5ft 8"). My face looked drawn, and I lost strength. Maybe its the 'genetics', but I think that I would be better off just training for fitness in general than starving myself down to a low bf%.

But I'm always willing to learn :)
