Should I be able to run??

Hi, im a new member here have been reading the forums for about a week and found it very interesting.

Im a 23 yr old guy, 5 foot 10 inches tall and weigh 99kg so i am very overweight. to get my bmi right i need to lose almost 30kg!!

i had been going gym regularly from november 2004 til march 2005 and then stopped due to exams etc. At that time i weighed 92-95kg and could run at 6.0mph for upto 8 minutes. Now, ive recently started going gym again and on the treadmill I cant run at 6.0mph for more than 4 minutes. I start gettin shin splints and my ankles and knees give way and my hearts pounding like crazy. This worries me!

At school i was reasonable fit, played a lot of basketball and was a good sprinter, average middle/long distance runner so i did have strong legs. obviously i have put on weight since then.

but my question is- for my age, weight and profile should i be able to run for longer than 4 measly minutes?? 6.0 mph is supposed to be light jog! ive been going gym for a month now and ive decided to walk at a steady 3.7 mph for 40 minutes and do 10-20 minutes of elliptical 4 times a week. will that help me to lose weight and once my weights down can i start running again? my knees and ankles are obviously not strong enough to support my bulk...

any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I definitely think you should be able to run longer than 4 minutes for your profile. But it also depends on how long you have been running.

Try to run a minute longer every other day and continue building it up. Keep trying and dont give up. Within 6 months, you may find yourself running much longer. You may even be able to do 1 hour with time. Dont try it all at a go and never give up.

All the best.

Cathy.

thanks for your reply.

i havnt been running long, actually from age 15 til age 22 i didnt run at all. right now i do a brisk walk at 3.7mph for 40 min. doesnt get my heart rate up but im in a sweat by the end of it. then i do 10 min of elliptical which does get my heart rate up. will this help me lose weight?

yeah should help just make sure you do get your heart rate up to 60% or higher of your max to burn fat off .. yep never give up you WILL make it :)
good luck cya

thanks guys really do appreciate you taking the time to help someone you dont even know.

i did read somewhere that brisk walking is as good exercise as running. would a 40 minute brisk walk 4-5 times a week be better than 15-20 minute of light jogging 4-5 times a week, solely in terms of burning fat and losing weight.

this is on top of having controlled my diet and trying not to eat after 7pm (except a bowl of cereal). i want to try and lose 1-2 kg every week.

yeah i think you are right thats what a lot of people have said to me. i think i will walk 40 minutes a day at say 3.7mph rather than run for 10 minutes at 6.0 mph and mess up my legs....losin weight is my only aim right now

again, thanks for taking time to read my posts and reply- really appreciate it :)
