shin splints?

Hey all!

I've been running about 5 miles/4 to 5 times a week. Well, I think I need some new shoes but I'm not sure. Lately, it switches back and forth from leg to leg...sometimes just one leg, sometimes both. It hurts but I just run through it. I know I could increase my miles if only I could get rid of this pain. I ran 5 miles on the tredmill on Thursday and it didn't hurt as much as running outside. I've tried stretching and all that.... I also eat pretty clean with the exception of my sweet tooth now and then. I stay well hydrated as well. Anyone have any ideas how to prevent it from hurting? Or ... recommend a really great shoe? I was thinking about some aasics? What do you all think? Thx so much!

Go to a shoe shop where they can give you a treadmill analysis. Shin splints are usually called by pronation of the feet whilst running. I have aasics gel kayanos and I have not had a problem with them and I have had about 4 pairs now.

Unfortunately shin splints cant be stopped through stretching.

You might try mixing up your distances on different days and even do sprints (HIIT) at least 2 times a week. For example try something like this through the week:
M - HIIT
T - 3 miles
W - HIIT
Th - 2 miles
F - 6 miles (gradually increase to 8-12 miles)
S - 2 miles
S - rest
That way you get at least one very long rnu in a week, but keep the total mileage down. Your joints and connective tissue will thank you. Too much total mileage per week will eventually cause damage to joints and connective tissue.

You might also try some resistance training: Calf Raises, Toe Raises, Squats, Romainian or SLDL. Those will strengthen (and stretch) the muscles and connective tissue, which helps to support the joints and can help to reduce things like shin splints and ankle and knee pain.

NBS- I was actually thinking of getting the aasics gel kayanos. I was recommended them from a friend. Thx for your response.

dswithers- What your saying is good... but I've been running the 5 miles a day bc runners supposedly lose weight quicker. I've been told its the best cardio and can help you burn the most calories the quickest. I just really seen that great of results yet... But I'm going to blame that on my diet... sometimes my sweet tooth gets in the way )o: thx for your response as well.
