Shin Pain whilst running

Hi,

I've been experiencing pain when running for quite some time now. I can do other exercises like cross trainers, swimming, cycling and even sports like football.

It seems like it should be shin splints, so I got myself a decent pair of trainers and they continued to hurt. I then rested up and avoided running, but it seems within 5 minutes of me starting to run my shins will be very sore.

Anyone got any idea on whether this could be anything other than shin splints, and any other preventative measures I could take to try and avoid this pain.

I really am trying to get back in shape to run the Great North Run this year, but am being seriously hindered by this.

Thanks

Shin spint prevention exercise

Sounds like shin splints to me. Rest helps but I also have an exercise for you. While sitting at your desk place the heel of one foot on the toes of the other while it is flat on the gound. Then put pressure on the bottom foot and lift your toes while the heel remains on the ground. Sort of like curls for the foot, alternate feet and do several sets of reps. This will build the muscle that supports the shin, and has worked for me in the past. Also, build up the thighs with squats or lunges during this resting phase, as it will only help support what is below and will not aggravate the shins.

hmmm

What is your weight? height?

when you say trainers, do you mean shoes?

how long have you been running 'regularly' and is this a new development?

Did the weather just freeze up on you and you are running in snow now?

not enough info to help you with an experienced solution.

Are you in good shape and now taking up more running, so you are enthused and are springing up in your jog? that springy running can make the fronts of your legs sore, and it is not a fatigue injury like splints. it's just sore.

tell us more.

Flyinfree,

I am 5 ft 7. 12.7 stone.

I'm slightly overweight by about half a stone at the moment but I've always been quite a large stocky build.

I've been experiencing the pain whenever I started running on a firm surface for several years, and as such, has put me off running. If it's intermittant running like football or badminton, I don't have the issue. I am using trainers, not ones fitted to my spec but a decent pair of running trainers.

Currently just running on a treadmill as the area around me is very hilly and difficult to run around until I get my fitness levels up. My current attempt at being fit has lasted 4 months, I have to admit my efforts to get fit come and go, but I am really hoping to stick with it this time hence why I'd like to get over this issue as it's a deterrent.

Most of my running when I was younger was sprinting, which may be detrimental to my jogging technique. Are there any exercises or techniques I can do whilst running?

It sounds like shin splint to me also.
Try to locate a book by Dr. Sheehan, I think that spelling is correct he has a group of exercises he calls the magic six they should help.

Also try walking about 1/2 mile or so before you run and cool down with a 1/2 mile walk when you are done.

You didn't say when you ran but I found for me it helped running later in the day rather then when you first get up.

I deal with this on a regular basis as do many others. I am gonna try JPfitness' suggestion to dunk your legs in icy water immediately afterwards and report back on the results. Brrrr.

A stone is 14 pounds.

What shoes do you use. When you say 'trainers' do you mean cross trainers? You really do need a shoe specifically for running. If you find a pair that work well, buy another and rotate them. This will keep the cushioning system fresh and less compressed on both pairs. (It'll also help keep them from getting smelly)

Whats a stone? :azzangel:

its like a very small rock:D
