Shedding fat + adding muscle

First, let me introduce myself. I am SGT Weber, US Army, Active Duty. I weight 205lbs and I am 5'11. I do not consider myself fat, nor do I consider myself 100% in shape. I can pass the Army Physical Fitness Test, but that is not good enough for me. I have always bs'd about getting in the gym for real and adding muscle while burning fat. I do have a few questions on how to efficiently do both, and I am more than open to suggests and advice. I will give you a little idea of what I have been doing so far.

Work Out Plan:
Monday: HIIT Cardio, and Abs
Tuesday: Upper Body, and Abs
Wednesday: Light Cardio, Lower Body, and Abs
Thursday: Upper Body, and Abs
Friday: Long session of Cardio, and Abs
Saturday: Upper Body, Cardio of choice and Abs
Sunday: Much needed off day

Now understandable I do Army PT on top of this, which mostly is sprinting/long runs/push ups/sit ups (exercises of that sort). I have started what I consider a good diet, with a decent amount of Protein filled food. Here is what My meal plan is.

Breakfest: Plain Oatmeal and hard boiled eggs (No Yoke)

Lunch: Chicken/Tuna, Natural white rice(I am in Korea, its the real rice), vegetable(Corn/Green beans/Cucumbers/Salad w/o dressing, and normally 5-6 grapes.

Dinner: Same as lunch

Snacks: I am going to add a Protein based snack between breakfast and lunch/lunch and dinner, and obviously protein shake after dinner.

My overall goal like I stated is to shed fat while putting on upper body strength. I already have a good build on my Thighs/Calfs/Quads (Sort of like a Running Back/Tight End build in legs). I Started lifting Sunday the 8th and obviously I was extremely sore on the 9th as well as today(In Korea) the 10th. I understand this to be known as DOMS. Today I lifted and pushed through the DOMS and currently my muscles feel like they hurt less than they did early today. I know when I wake up tomorrow I am going to feel like crap again and I am ok with that. As far as Cardio goes, I do sprints, long runs, elliptical, stair master, treadmill ect. I just would like to know if I continue down this road If I will reach my goal of shedding fat and adding muscle. Please feel free to rip me for something stupid, or praise me for something good, I take ALL criticism with open arms. I am here because I know I am not an expert and that 95% of you know way more than I do. So please fire away guys. Once again thanks for everything I appreciate it. Oh and short term goal is to drop 10lbs in the next 30 days with this program. Any tweaks to help me reach my short term goal will only help me reach my long term goal quicker, which means one day maybe I can help someone just like me. Thanks!

Hey armysgt, welcome to the forum!

In my personal opinion, I think you would be better off doing a full-body workout 3 days per week, with various types of cardio on the other days. However, if you have reasons for doing a split, then by all means, keep doing it.

In terms of losing fat vs. losing weight, there is a thread here that might help: http://training.fitness.com/weight-loss/training-fat-loss-51064.html. Also, it might be worth your while to take a look at some of the other sticky threads... they contain lots of great information!

Good luck to you! Can't wait to hear about your progress!
