Serious Muscle Stiffness After Workout

Hi,

I am almost 45 and exercise at least 3 times a week. Two times a week I play basketball for about 1 hour... hard running up and down the court at lunch time. Been doing this for over a year.

I return to the office and my leg and groin muscles are really stiff for at least 6 hours.

Does anybody suggest a supplement I can take before or after workout, to minimize this stiffness.

supplements won't help. you probably aren't hydrated enough, and need to do some post workout stretching to aleviate the stiffness.

I am 46 and for over two years, I have been training consistantly without any lapse, and one of the most important aspects of my training is: WarmingUP (various stretching techniques with bands), and warmingDOWN (various stretching techniques with bands). Until recently (rotator cuff injury from improper form on an exercise), I never had a joint injury, any other "improper" aches and pains, or tendon/joint pain.

It is important to properly shuttle blood into the muscles that are about to be worked to have them perform properly (its like putting oil in your engine so-to-speak)

In addition, before I consume any food in the mornings when I wake up, the FIRST thing I do is drink water. I agree with Malkore, make sure you are properly hydrated. This alone "can" remove and/or prevent allot of complications.

Make sure you are properly warmed up and hydrated before beginning your sessions. Take time to warmdown, and consume proper liquids afterwards. And, I am stating this assuming you dont have any internal health issues unknown.

EDIT: How is your diet? How many calories do you consume? Are you giving your body the nutrients and energy to meet the demands you are placing on it?

You are all probably right... I drink coffee all morning, stretch pretty good before, drink a little water during, DONT STRETCH AFTER, then go back to maybe two glasses of water. I know I should stretching after (will do that), but loading up on water... I should be doing more!!!

thanks.

Once your game is finished, you might also want to consider taking 3+ minutes to do some laps around the court at relatively easy pace. Depending on how hard you went ' stop and go ' during your basketball game, you might have some lactic acid still lingering around which might contribute to some soreness later on. Doing a light jog once your game is done will help you flush it out.

maybe you had an intense work out. I got to do experience one of these things once although probably not on the same intensity as what you've encountered. what i did was soak my self into a warm tub of and epsom salts and eventually the pain was gone.
